Presentation given by Bianca Pop from Tritecc in the framework of the Emergence Forum Barcelona
Biocat organized the Barcelona Emergence Forum (April 10-11th, 2014, Congress Palace, Montjuïc) supported by the TRANSBIO SUDOE, a translational cooperation project dedicated to innovation in life sciences in South-West Europe. The Barcelona Emergence Forum contributed to bringing together Academics, Companies, Investment Entities, Technology Platforms and Technology Transfer Offices from Spain, France and Portugal to set up collaborative projects on Human Health & Agro-food Innovation.

Bianca Pop / TRANSBIO: Biotransformation of by-products from fruit and vegetable processing industry into valuable bioproducts
1. BioTRANSformation of by-products from fruit and vegetable
processing industry into valuable BIOproducts
A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
TRANSBIO SUDOE Emergence Forum
11 April 2014
Dipl.Ing. Bianca Pop – Tritecc, Romania
2. Grant Agreement no.: 289603
A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
CONSORTIUM of 16 PARTNERS
Argentina, Belgium, Costa Rica, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Romania, Spain
TOTAL BUDGET: 4.026.840 €
Requested EU Contribution: 2.989.465 €
Duration: 48 Months
Starting date: 1 December 2011
3. OBJECTIVE
A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
valorisation of sub-
products from the fruit and
vegetable processing
industry
environmentally
friendly
biotechnological
solutions
Bioplastics - PHB Succinic Acid Enzymes
4. STRATEGY
A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
5. A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
END Products
the end-products will be:
• biopolymers (PHB) for bio-plastic packaging applications
• succinic acid – purified for nutraceuticals/ platform chemicals
• enzymes for household applications such as detergents
pre-treated by-products + remaining biomass ->feedstock for biogas production
Succinic Acid Chemistry to Derivatives
(Werpy et al, 2004)
6. A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
By-products for hydrolyses experiments fully characterized and selected
Laboratory fermentation test trails are running using new selected strains
and hydrolysates from fruit and vegetable by-products. Based on the
results the most promising combinations strain/hydrolysate will be
selected for up-scaling in technical scale
The transfer of results in pilot scale are foreseen to start in march 2015
7. VALUE CHAIN POTENTIAL
A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
a software tool was developed, in order to continuously up-
date process data / productivity versus costs / economic
performance etc. All partners are sending regularly the
newest research results to be implemented in the Tool
LCA study is on-going, evaluating also economic feasibility
8. Industrial IMPLEMENTATION
A European Project supported within the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
Every TRANSBIO partner has special complementary expertise in order to
implement the holistic biorefinery concept based on by-products from fruit and
vegetable processing:
• Fruit & Vegetable By-products
• By-product Pre-treatment and Enzymatic Hydrolysis
• Microbial Strain Selection
• Fermentation Strategies
• Down-stream Processing
• Application Development
• Biogas production
• Life Cycle Assessment & Economic Feasibility Study
