  • 2. Tomato, potato, squash, bean, corn, peanut, hot pepper, cacao, vanilla, pineapple, turkey… All these products were unknown in Europe, Asia and Africa before the discovery of the American continent by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Read the following text

    • There is a huge list of products that have not been eaten in Europe, sometimes actually the 19th century, because they are all native to Latin America
  • 4. Can you imagine Mediterranean cooking without tomatoes or peppers? Irish stew without potatoes? Indian cooking without hot peppers?
  • 5. Listen carefully What food is she telling about?
    • Christopher Columbus discovered pineapple in 1493, when he landed in Guadeloupe. Fruit of the bromeliaceae family, genus ananas comesus, pineapple is probably native to Brazil (nana means fragrant in Guarani language).
    • Cacahuaquchtl, the tree of the Maya gods. The cacao tree is 5 to 6 meter high and native to the tropical rain forests of Yucatan and Guatemala
  • 6. 3. The wild turkey is a "chicken-like" bird. It is the largest game bird in North America. The wild turkey does not look like the turkey that is raised on farms. It is smaller in size with smaller breast, longer legs and neck. Turkeys raised on farms have white feathers. 4 Maize production originated in southern Mexico. Along with the potato, it was a primary food of the Incas in Peru and an important staple in Mesoamerica and North America as well.
