WHAT IS PLASTIC
 A PLASTIC MATERIAL IS ANY OF A WIDE RANGE OF SYNTHETIC OR SEMI-
SYNTHETIC ORGANIC SOLIDS THAT ARE MALLEABLE.
 THEY ARE USUALLY SYNTHETIC, MOST COMMONLY DERIVED FROM
PETROCHEMICALS.

 PLASTIC WASTE COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES MUST BE SEPARATED
FROM OTHER WASTE.

CLEANING PROCESS

SHREDDING PROCESS
 PLASTICS WILL BE SHREDDED OR CUT INTO SMALL PIECES.
 THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLASTIC WASTES ARE MIXED TOGETHER.
COLLECTION PROCESS
 THE PLASTIC WASTE REMAINING IN 1.5 TO 2 mm ARE COLLECTED AT ONE PLACE.
ON SITE EXECUTION
 THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF EXECUTION PROCESS OF PLASTICS.
• WET PROCESS
• DRY PROCESS
WET PROCESS
 BLENDING OF WASTE PLASTICS BY DIRECT MIXING OF SHREDDED PLASTICS
WITH HOT BITUMEN AT 160°C.
 MECHANICAL STIRRER IS NEEDED AS THE MIXING IS DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF
DIFFERENCE IN VISCOSITIES OF MOLTEN POLYMER AND BITUMEN.
 ADDITION OF STABILIZERS AND PROPER COOLING ARE REQUIRED.
 SINCE THE WET PROCESS REQUIRE A LOT OF INVESTMENT AND BIGGER
PLANTS.
 NOT COMMONLY USED.

 THIS PROCESS IS DEVELOPED BY

 THE AGGREGATE IS HEATED UP TO 170°C IN THE MINI HOT MIX PLANT.
MINI HOT MIX PLANT
AGGREGATE TRANSFERRED TO
PUDDLING CHAMBER
 THE SHREDDED PLASTICS IS ADDED TO THE HOT AGGREGATE IN EQUAL
PROPORTION.
WASTE PLASTICS MIXED WITH THE HOT AGGREGATES
 THIS PLASTIC GET COATED OVER THE AGGREGATE UNIFORMLY.
COATED AGGREGATE PLAIN AGGREGATE
 IMMIDIATELY THE HOT BITUMEN WITH 160°C IS ADDED WITH THE MIXTURE.
BEFORE BITUMEN MIX
BITUMEN IS ADDED WITH
COATED AGGREGATE
 THE MIXTURE IS TRANSFERRED TO THE ROAD AND THE ROAD IS LAID.
Road is being laid
CHARACTERISTIC OF PLASTIC COATED
AGGREGATE
 LOS ANGEL’S ABRASION TEST –
 WEAR AND TEAR VALUES OF PLASTIC COATED AGGREGATE IF FOUND
TO BE DECREASING WHILE USING PLASTICS.
 EG. 37% WITHOUT PLASTIC, 32% WITH 1% PLASTIC, 29% WITH 2%
PLASTIC.
 SOUNDNESS TEST-
 THE PLASTIC COATED AGGREGATE, DID NOT SHOW ANY WEIGHT
LOSS, HENCE IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE AGGREGATE.

 Plastics Improves Aggregate Impact Value.
 Helps To Improve The Quality Of Flexible Pavement

 SIMPLE PROCESS, NO NEW MECHINARY IS REQUIRED.
 USE HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF PLASTIC WASTE.
 REDUSE THE NEED OF THE BITUMEN BY AROUND 10%.
 INCREASE THE STRENGTH AND PERFORMANCE OF THE ROAD.
 REDUSE THE COST AROUND Rs.5000/KM OF SINGLE LANE ROAD.
 GENERATE JOBS FOR RAG PICKERS.
 UP TO 10,00,000 CARRY BAGS DISSAPEARED IN ONLY 10Mtr.
 NO POT HOLES.
DISADVANTAGES
 TOXICS PRESENT IN THE PLASTICS WOULD START LEACHING AFTER SOME
YEARS.
 ONCE THE ROAD STARTED TO USE,IT WILL REALESE THE FINE PARTCELS OF
POLYMER.

  • 3. WHAT IS PLASTIC  A PLASTIC MATERIAL IS ANY OF A WIDE RANGE OF SYNTHETIC OR SEMI- SYNTHETIC ORGANIC SOLIDS THAT ARE MALLEABLE.  THEY ARE USUALLY SYNTHETIC, MOST COMMONLY DERIVED FROM PETROCHEMICALS.

  • 5. STEPS FOR USING PLASTIC IN ROADS  SEGREGATION  CLEANING PROCESS  SHREDDING PROCESS  COLLECTION PROCESS
  • 6. SEGREGATIO N  PLASTIC WASTE COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES MUST BE SEPARATED FROM OTHER WASTE.  MAXIMUM THICKNESS OF 60 MICRONS.
  • 7. CLEANING PROCESS  PLASTIC WASTE GET CLEANED AND DRIED.
  • 8. SHREDDING PROCESS  PLASTICS WILL BE SHREDDED OR CUT INTO SMALL PIECES.  THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLASTIC WASTES ARE MIXED TOGETHER.
  • 9. COLLECTION PROCESS  THE PLASTIC WASTE REMAINING IN 1.5 TO 2 mm ARE COLLECTED AT ONE PLACE.
  • 10. ON SITE EXECUTION  THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF EXECUTION PROCESS OF PLASTICS. • WET PROCESS • DRY PROCESS
  • 11. WET PROCESS  BLENDING OF WASTE PLASTICS BY DIRECT MIXING OF SHREDDED PLASTICS WITH HOT BITUMEN AT 160°C.  MECHANICAL STIRRER IS NEEDED AS THE MIXING IS DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF DIFFERENCE IN VISCOSITIES OF MOLTEN POLYMER AND BITUMEN.  ADDITION OF STABILIZERS AND PROPER COOLING ARE REQUIRED.  SINCE THE WET PROCESS REQUIRE A LOT OF INVESTMENT AND BIGGER PLANTS.  NOT COMMONLY USED.
  • 12. DRY PROCES S  THIS PROCESS IS DEVELOPED BY prof. R.VASUDEVAN.  HE IS THE DEAN OF DEPT. OF CHEMISTRY IN THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING.
  • 13.  THE AGGREGATE IS HEATED UP TO 170°C IN THE MINI HOT MIX PLANT. MINI HOT MIX PLANT AGGREGATE TRANSFERRED TO PUDDLING CHAMBER
  • 14.  THE SHREDDED PLASTICS IS ADDED TO THE HOT AGGREGATE IN EQUAL PROPORTION. WASTE PLASTICS MIXED WITH THE HOT AGGREGATES
  • 15.  THIS PLASTIC GET COATED OVER THE AGGREGATE UNIFORMLY. COATED AGGREGATE PLAIN AGGREGATE
  • 16.  IMMIDIATELY THE HOT BITUMEN WITH 160°C IS ADDED WITH THE MIXTURE. BEFORE BITUMEN MIX BITUMEN IS ADDED WITH COATED AGGREGATE
  • 17.  THE MIXTURE IS TRANSFERRED TO THE ROAD AND THE ROAD IS LAID. Road is being laid
  • 18. CHARACTERISTIC OF PLASTIC COATED AGGREGATE  LOS ANGEL’S ABRASION TEST –  WEAR AND TEAR VALUES OF PLASTIC COATED AGGREGATE IF FOUND TO BE DECREASING WHILE USING PLASTICS.  EG. 37% WITHOUT PLASTIC, 32% WITH 1% PLASTIC, 29% WITH 2% PLASTIC.  SOUNDNESS TEST-  THE PLASTIC COATED AGGREGATE, DID NOT SHOW ANY WEIGHT LOSS, HENCE IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE AGGREGATE.
  • 19.  Aggregate Impact Value  Plastics Improves Aggregate Impact Value.  Helps To Improve The Quality Of Flexible Pavement Aggregate impact value % of plastic coating over aggregate Compressive strength (MPa) Bending strength (MPa) 10% 250 325 20% 270 335 30% 290 350 40% 320 390 BINDING PROPERTY
  • 20. ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC ROAD  SIMPLE PROCESS, NO NEW MECHINARY IS REQUIRED.  USE HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF PLASTIC WASTE.  REDUSE THE NEED OF THE BITUMEN BY AROUND 10%.  INCREASE THE STRENGTH AND PERFORMANCE OF THE ROAD.  REDUSE THE COST AROUND Rs.5000/KM OF SINGLE LANE ROAD.  GENERATE JOBS FOR RAG PICKERS.  UP TO 10,00,000 CARRY BAGS DISSAPEARED IN ONLY 10Mtr.  NO POT HOLES.
  • 21. DISADVANTAGES  TOXICS PRESENT IN THE PLASTICS WOULD START LEACHING AFTER SOME YEARS.  ONCE THE ROAD STARTED TO USE,IT WILL REALESE THE FINE PARTCELS OF POLYMER.

  • 24. CONCLUSION  PLASTIC WILL INCREASE THE ADHESSIVE NATURE OF THE BITUMEN.  NOT ONLY STRENGTHEND THE ROAD BUT ALSO THE ROAD LIFE.  ECONOMICAL.  INCREASED DURABILITY.  ECO-FRIENDLY.
