  • Forbo Arborite explosion on May 26, 1993 in Concord. A live steam injection hot water accumulator exploded. This was a 100% B&M loss, no fire. The loss amount was approximately $10 Million. The force of the explosion blew out the southwest wall. No one was killed, but seven people were injured. A group of five workers were saved by being outside for their morning coffee and cigarette break. Fortunately these occurrences are rare. A 6’X36’ steam injected boiler exploded, caused extensive damage to more than half of the building. This boiler apparently had developed a leak. An unqualified repair person was called to repair the leak and subsequent to his visit, the boiler exploded. Fortunately, no one was killed, however, steel girders and pieces of the building flew hundreds of meters into the neighbourhood, causing serious damage to neighbouring buildings. The concussion of the explosion was so great that it threw the occupants of the building out into the parking lot with equal force. Had the explosion not been as devastating, occupants would have surely been thrown against the walls and equipment and most likley would have died. This was a 100% B&M loss with no evidence of fire (joint loss). The quantum of the loss was $11,000,000. www.biico.com
