  • 3. Sense & Reference: 8 October 2013 3 Reference deals with the relationship between linguistics and non linguistic elements. Reference is something having physical existance.
  • 4. Sense: Sense deals with the intralinguistic relationships. Sense is something which does not have any physical existance. 8 October 2013 4
  • 5. Both sense and reference are different but related aspects of semantics 8 October 2013 5
  • 6. Reference is the essential element of semantics. Because semantics is the way we relate our language to the world of experience and reference does the same. 8 October 2013 6

  • 12. Sense: Sense, primarily concerned with sentence According to Bierwisch A semantic theory must explain such sentences. His typewriter has bad intentions Anomalous My unmarried sister is married to a bachelor. Contradictory John is looking for the glasses. Ambiguous 8 October 2013 12
  • 13. Some Linguists, attempted to limit semantics to sense relations. 8 October 2013 13 Katz & Fodor explicitly exclude reference from the settings of sentences
  • 14. Conclusion:- Not Possible to distinguish between SENSE & REFERENCE Categories of our language correspond to real world distinctions. Whether language determines the shape of the world or vice versa is a “chicken and egg” problem. 8 October 2013 14
