Development of catalogues in Catalonia Ministry of Culture and the Media General Sub-Directorate for Libraries

1. Legal Empowerment The Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia gives the Catalan Government powers in archives, libraries, museums and other cultural heritage centers not owned by the Spanish State. According to the Law 4/1993, on the Library System of Catalonia our government must meet in a single union catalogue reference literature of the different backgrounds of the libraries that integrate Library System of Catalonia .

4. What are we doing now?

The existence of a collective catalogue for public libraries.

The creation of the National Catalogue of Catalonia.

5. The Public Reading System The Catalonian Public Libraries System (CPLS) is the whole of the organized public library services of this European region. In 2009, it consisted of 321 libraries in 249 towns, 11 mobile libraries and a Lending and Special Services Central (CePSE) serving over seven million inhabitants. The Catalonian public libraries are managed by the town councils and receive support at different levels by the provincial councils, the district councils, and the Catalan government. The CPLS has more than 2,3 million registered users, over 1,667 staff members, and a circulation of fourteen million items per-year.

National Catalogue of Catalonia To define the model of the catalogue the Ministry of Culture and the Media has formed the Collective Catalogue of the Library System Coordination Committee where all the participating institutions are involved (government, municipalities, universities, etc.). This catalogue should allow access to view the collections of over 600 libraries, more than 5,000,000 bibliographic records, 19,000,000 item records and should be able to process interlibrary loan for 7 million potential users.

Currently, different Catalan institutions libraries are in the process of changing it’s library management system
