1. 1. Cryo-save India (part of Cryo-Save NV) Stem cells Banking
 2. 2. WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?

"Stem cells are cells that have the potential to grow into any other type of cells“

They are the building blocks of the blood and immune system that can reproduce into other cell types, including bone, heart, muscle, and nerve.

 3. 3. What are sources/types of stem cells in the Human Body? 3.Blood Stem Cells 1.Bone Marrow Stem Cells 2.Embryonic Stem cells 4.Cord Lining Stem Cells
 4. 4. Cryo-save India (part of Cryo-Save NV) Why stem cells from U cord After a baby is born and the umbilical cord is cut, some blood remains in the blood vessels of the placenta and the portion of the umbilical cord that remains attached to it. After birth, the baby no longer needs this extra blood. This blood is called placental blood or umbilical cord blood: "cord blood" for short. Cord blood contains all the normal elements of blood - red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. But it is also rich in hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells, similar to those found in bone marrow. This is why cord blood can be used for transplantation instead of bone marrow. Cord blood is being used increasingly on an experimental basis as a source of stem cells, as an alternative to bone marrow. Most cord blood transplants have been done to treat diseases of the blood and immune system. It has also been used to restore the functional deficiencies of several genetic metabolic diseases. To date, more than 70 different diseases have been treated with cord blood transplants.
 5. 5. bone marrow cord blood Donation requires surgery under general anesthesia. Donors may experience temporary discomfort and/or pain. Long-term consequences of growth factors used in peripheral blood stem cell donations are uncertain. When obtained from the delivered placenta and umbilical cord, donation poses no risk to mother or infant. Requires donation of a quart or more of bone marrow (mixed with blood) for transplant A few ounces can be used for transplantation. Large dose of stem cells. Rapid engraftment. Smaller dose of stem cells. Slower engraftment Potential donors may no longer be available or may have withdrawn consent. Donor must be found and retested to confirm the HLA typing and infectious disease results and to confirm that the donor is still willing and able to donate bone marrow. Significant donor attrition Once frozen, a cord blood unit is available until used. Otherwise, no donor attrition Generally requires a perfect match between donor and recipient for 6/6 HLA Generally requires a match between donor and recipient for 4/6 ,5/6 ,6/6 HLA After a formal search is begun, takes an average of 4 months to transplant, if a donor is available. When a match is found, can take only a few days for confirmatory and special testing and shipment to the Transplant Center (less than 24 hours in an emergency).

 11. 11. Describe HLA matching

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) test, also known as HLA typing

or tissue typing, identifies antigens on the white blood cells (WBC’s) that determine tissue compatibility for organ transplantation .

(that is, histocompatibility testing).

Similar to blood grouping i.e. A, B, AB

IN SIMPLE TERMS ITS PROTEIN MATCHING OF 6 PARAMETERS.

In case of bone marrow we require 100% match (i.e. 5/6 or 6/6)

50% match in case of cord stem cells.( i.e. 3/6 OR 4/6)

Nicholas Henderson – T cell Lymphoma Austin – Myelo Dysplastic Syndrome Tom Stretch – Chronic Granulomatous Disease Hemant Bebera - Thalassemia Blayke & Garrett LaRue – X Linked Lympho-proliferative Disorder Erica Nader – Spinal cord injury Hank Heacock - Leukemia All these patients were treated with Stem Cells at various centres.
 15. 15. Cryo-save India (part of Cryo-Save NV) Therapy in India AIIMS team shows how stem cells save hearts. Taken from bone marrow, they can revitalize non-functional heart muscles.

 17. 17.

The first successful cord blood transplant was performed in 1988 on a 5 year old boy with Fanconi’s Anemia (a rare, genetic and lethal type of anemia).

He was given 0% chance for survival. The donor was his newborn sister. Today, he is alive and free from disease more than 15 years after the transplant.

In February 2007 a child suffering from a severe T-cell (CD8+) immune deficiency syndrome has been treated successfully with umbilical cord blood stem cells in Portugal. The stem cells used for this transplantation were h arvested from the umbilical cord blood .

The umbilical cord blood sample was processed and stored at the private stem cell bank facilities of Cryo-Save in Belgium.
