Disability, handicap, inability <ul><li>Disability </li></ul><ul><ul><li>An inability to do something; specifically an inability to do something that most people can (not situation dependent) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Handicap </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A disadvantage imposed on an individual (situation dependent) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The vast majority of students with disabilities are more like their typically developing peers than they are unlike. </li></ul>

Special education <ul><li>Special education is a service, not a place </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A student with a learning disability needs a preview of math concepts before a new chapter . </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>That preview is a service that could be provided in a variety of places. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A student with an emotional or behavioral disorder needs a token economy to maintain school-appropriate behavior. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The token economy is a service that could be provided in a variety of settings. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A student with a cognitive disability needs modified instruction </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The modified instruction is a service that could be provided in a variety of settings. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Disability categories <ul><li>Child with a disability means a child evaluated as having </li></ul><ul><ul><li>mental retardation (cognitive disability in Ohio) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>hearing impairment (including deafness) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>speech or language impairment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>visual impairment (including blindness) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>serious emotional disturbance </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>orthopedic impairment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>autism </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>traumatic brain injury </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>other health impairment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>specific learning disability </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>deaf-blindness </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>multiple disabilities </li></ul></ul><ul><li>and by reason thereof, needs special education and related services. </li></ul>
