Mentoring

 1. 1. DUALEXPAT. com Join the mentor program
 2. 2. Summary

What is mentoring?

Why you should join the program as a mentor.

How far do you engage?

How you can do it.

 3. 3. What is mentoring? Mentoring consists essentially in connecting 2 persons , where the experienced one is providing support, encouragement and guidance to the other. As the concept of “experience” is only relative to a particular field or environment, it paves the way for cross mentoring where the 2 persons are alternatively embracing the roles of Mentor & Mentee. In the digital area it is not uncommon, and often very rewarding, to implement reverse mentoring where a junior person provides guidance to a more senior one in the use of new equipment, software and social media.
 4. 4. Why you should join the program as a mentor

It’s useful for the mentee. You cannot imagine how your experience can be valuable for a person who is only starting in a particular field or environment, be it a field of studies, a new place to work and live, a new career,…

It’s rewarding. The best way to value your own experience is to get positive feedback from a person who is taking benefit of it. The more challenging and demanding the person, the more opportunities the relation is providing to revisit your experience, to conceptualize and synthesize it.

You have the capacity to do so. People are often underassessing the width of their experience. They may consider mentoring is an affair of experts. But mentoring is neither coaching nor training, it is merely a question of transmission, of active listening and benevolence.

Because:
 5. 5. How far do you engage?

A typical mentoring program is extending over a period of 3 to 6 months.

You are having regular exchanges with your mentee, either face to face or via tel, skype and e-mail.

What the mentee is expecting from you is:

To be present and focused on him and his development needs

To provide feedback and guidance to answer questions or to make choice

To be a facilitator (when it is possible), to help him access resources and information, connect with useful persons,…
