XenMotion Deep Dive - Presentation Transcript

    1. XenMotion Deep Dive Citrix XenServer 5
    2. XenMotion – Live VM Movement
      • XenMotion allows minimal downtime movement of VMs between physical systems
    3. XenMotion – Live VM Movement
      • Generally 150-200ms of actual “downtime”
    4. XenMotion – Live VM Movement
      • Most of the downtime is related to network switch moving IP traffic to new port
    5. XenMotion CPU Requirements
      • XenMotion requires systems that have similar CPUs
    6. XenMotion CPU Requirements
      • Must be the same manufacturer
    7. XenMotion CPU Requirements
      • Must be the same type
    8. XenMotion CPU Requirements
      • Can be different speed
    9. XenMotion CPU Requirements
      • Example Xeon 51xx series chips
        • Could have a mix of 5130 and 5120 chips
    10. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
      • Systems verify correct storage and network setup on destination server
      Source Virtual Machine Destination
    11. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
      • VM Resources Reserved on Destination Server
      Source Virtual Machine Destination
    12. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
      • While source VM is still running XenServer copies over memory image to destination server
    13. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
      • XenServer keeps track of any memory changes during this process
    14. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
    15. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
    16. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
      • After first pass most of the memory image is now copied to the destination server
    17. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 1
      • Any memory changes during initial memory copy are tracked
    18. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 2
      • XenServer now does another pass at copying over changed memory
    19. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 2
    20. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 2
      • Xen still tracks any changes during the second memory copy
    21. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 2
      • Second copy moves much less data
    22. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 2
      • Also less time for memory changes to occur
    23. Pre-Copy Migration: Round 2
    24. Pre-Copy Migration
      • Xen will keep doing successive memory copies until minimal differences between source & destination
    25. XenMotion: Final
      • Source VM is paused and last bit of memory and machine state copied over
    26. XenMotion: Final
      • Master unlocks storage from source system and locks to destination system
    27. XenMotion: Final
      • Destination VM is unpaused and attached to storage and network resources
    28. XenMotion: Final
      • Source VM resources cleared
