CD Cover Analysis
Media Studies
The dark background contrasts with the
lighting of the children drawing the main
focus to the for ground
The tiger face paint symbolises a wild animalistic
quality within the children, as tigers are generally
a territorial predator. Also contrasting with the
title of the album ‘wild youth’.
The gold sticker says “fun time”, perhaps
identifying that the kids went to a carnival
and had there face painted. Adding the
sense of youth and fun.
The boys bright blue eyes are looking right at the viewer,
involving the audience in a intimate family photo. Also
representing confidence to confront the photographer, once
again demonstrating a powerful/ wild exterior.
The girls eyes are looking away from the audience,
representing a more subtle personality, contrasting to
the boys personality.
The hand around the girls neck adds a feeling
of familiarity. The two kids aren't just
random strangers they have a more intimate
relationship possibly brother and sister. This
adds a more homily vibe to the cover and
possibly the band being a family band.
The photos structure and
quality hints to a family
photo, something taken
of the band members
from when they were
children.
‘The Wild Youth’ is written in a
small feminine font. Due to the
size the title isn’t as important as
the bands name, yet the actual
band haven't been truly visually
represented on the cover.
The bands name is in all capitals with a
more dominant font, symbolising the
importance of advertising the bands name.
Despite no visual representation the name
itself seems very important.
The old style sweaters
hint at the idea of an old
family photo, as well as
the style of haircuts.
The soft yellow colour adds a
calming colour to contrast with
the strong dominant blue and
crisp white. Also symbolises
the sun.
The crisp white is traditionally a
symbol of innocence, perhaps a
representation of the innocence of
nature and life in the form of a tree.
The title of the album is EXIS, which
appears to be carved into the tree,
this could be a representation of
how Roy Woods the artist hasn’t
forgotten his roots but started a new
journey in his music career.
The font is small and handwritten not meant to be
the main focus of the album but still a vital part of
this minimalistic artwork.
The artists name is also written in a small basic
font meaning the music isn’t meant to be tied
strongly with the artist and his name.
The minimalistic cover is a classy yet artistic
version, many CD covers recently have
large bright colours and letters to draw
attention but this style of simplicity is a
refreshing take on noticeability.
The dominance of a deep blue draws
the audience’s attention. It also hints
at a strong form of music and
meaning.
The drawing of the tree shows a
connection to nature and life. Perhaps
the symbolism of the tree, specifically
the roots is to show despite the new
music the artist still knows where his
roots are.
Additionally there is no visual portrayal of
the artists apart of the album. This
demonstrates the rawness of the music and
how its not about the names attached to the
songs (eg. Drake ft.'s in this album.)
The simplistic cover forces the audience to want to know what the
music is like because there are not many hints to how it will sound.
The album title is the
predominant item on the cover,
this could mean the band really
wanted the audience to focus on
the music and not the names
attached or the extras.
The people playing in the
ocean are acting relaxed and
carefree, possibly the cover is
trying to visual create the
sound you hear on the tracks.
The music itself is very indie and beach, the
beach on the cover is used as symbolism.
The use of the bright yellow on the cover
adds little bits of interest to an otherwise
basic cover with plan covers. Not
overpowering but still attention grabbing.
The use of the colour blue is a symbolic
representation of calmness, as blue is
usually associated with soft and calm
feelings.
The bands name is in small
lower case letters with a
pretty basic font, allowing the
cover and the title to take
centre stage but still
acknowledging the artists
shows modesty but also
recognition.
The composition of the album is pretty basic, possibly due to the
album title being the focal item on the cover over the top of everyday
beach goers the band is trying to appeal to a wide audience, with no
specific targeting. More just the middle working class.
The lighting has a sort of yellow tinge, this
generally represents a sickness.
The absence of a title and
recognition of the artist in
written format adds a
mystery to an already unique
cover.
The symbolism of the third eye is a representation of
the indigo children, people who can see beyond what
society sees, people with a spiritual purpose. The
artist has drawn a third eye on herself, showing she
sees herself as an indigo child.
The regular drawing of the
artist face shows who made
the music and solves some
of the mystery that is
created by the absence of
the title.
The drawing of people on half of her face perhaps
shows the possibility of two faced. The effect of
the drawing also depicts the people crawling on
her face like she cant control it
The large aggressive ear-piercing add a
sense of punk to the album cover,
hinting at the genre and appealing to a
certain audience.
Colour contrast is used quite
clearly on this cover, with a start
comparison between the black
background and the bright white
for the foreground.
Traditionally brown eyes represent a
caring and nurturing personality, this
could symbolise the meanings in the
music.
The basic layout of the cover also hints
to a mystery. Not many hints are giver
as to what sort of music this cover is
for, intriguing the audience to listen to
the album.
The music is aimed at an older audience, due to the
basic but complex style of art and the black and
white colour scheme, as most kid music has bright
colours and cartoon characters.
The font used is very dominant and bold,
and the artists name is the largest writing
on the cover, this represents the artists
desire to be recognised for her music.
The album cover is also a bold
writing but less dominant than
the artists name, symbolising
whilst the music is important the
artists name is more vital to
appeal to the audience.
The strong contrast in colour between the
artists skin and dark clothes adds a depth
to the image. This draws the audience in by
standing out with strong tones but not bold
colours.
The artist is sitting in the cover with her legs crossed
and a slouched back, this represents comfortableness
and easy which could be symbol for the style of
music.
The monochrome colour pallet
is usually aimed at an older
audience, as young children
don’t often respond to dark
colours.
The dark colours also symbolise a
darker style of music, with harsh lines
and strong shadows it adds an edge to
the cover that could continue into the
music.
The crinkles in the brown paper in the
background add a subtle but sharp geometric
essence to the cover. The shadows and shape
add a softness but the actual diagonal direction
of the paper add a edge and bluntness to an
otherwise simple cover.
Not only is the artists name very bold and large the
artist herself is sitting directly in the middle of the
cover, this is a strong form of advertising as the
audience will recognise her face and hopefully
purchase the album.
The lighting is used efficiently to
highlight the artists face to further
emphasise the importance of the
girl.
The album cover is written in a large bold
font, emphasising the importance of the
music. Also the font is written in a pure
white, traditionally white represented
purity and innocence.
the absence of a artists name shows how
the music is supposed to stand on its own,
not supported by the name and advertising
that comes along with the artist.
The stark contrast of blue against pink encourages the
audience to notice the album cover, but doesn’t
overpower the title with extreme colours and harsh
shapes.
Not many hints are left for what type of genre
this album is for, the simplistic use of shapes
and colour generally hints at an alternative
style and the use of a beanie is a stereotypical
representation of the younger generation.
Whilst the absence of the artist name adds a
mystery to what type of music this is, the artists
face is simplistically added through a collage
effect. This does allow recognition to the artist
but the visual isn’t 100% accurately and doesn’t
represent Allday immediately.
The structure of the album cover is very basic with only the
album cover and the picture of Allday in the foreground. This
minimalistic approach causes the audience to be intrigued
and want to listen to the album to find out more about the
mysterious album.
The colour pallet of the album
consists of black white blue and
pink. A basic consistency but still
quite bright and eye catching.
The representation in the illustration is of an average
Australian boy, long hair and a beanie is a common look for
the teen age group. This allows the everyday person to
identify with the cover and in turn identify with the music.
The artists name is in large capital letters
in the middle of the cover, dominating the
space. This indicates that the artists wants
his name know and attached to the music.
The absence of the album title creates a
mysterious effect where the audience
doesn’t know what music they will hear
in the songs just the artist name.
The body in the cover is hunched over with
tense shoulders, this symbolises exhaustion
or sadness. Like the person Is so tired or
distraught that they can no longer stand up
straight.
The backs of the arms look like they are trying to
open something, in addition the shoulders are
hunched over appearing as though the person is
putting in a large amount of effort to open
something. This adds to the mysterious
characterises as you cant tell what the person is
doing nor what his face looks like.
Despite having the artists name on the
cover they person is turned away and
shielding most of his body, this could
symbolise that the audience may know
his name but not who the artist truly is.
The large contrast between the shadows on the person and the bright red and yellow
background creates are loud cover. The colours are intended to catch the eye of the viewer but
traditionally red can be a symbol of love or hatred and yellow is the representation of
happiness and brightness. This could be a symbol of how the unknown person is conflicted
between two opposing sides of himself or what's around him.
The body is cut in half just below his
shoulders. This could be a representation of
how the two contrasting sides have taken a
piece of him and with the symbolism of him
trying to open something it could be the
person trying to hold himself together.
The use of bright colours is generally a
marketing strategies to attract children but
the separation of the man indicates that
this cover is targeted at an older audience
but still young. This cover hints at a n
alternative genre but no clear indications
for which genre.
The blue diagonal lines could be a
representation of rain or storm, because the
man is only seeing the rain and not being
rained on it could symbolise how he sees a
storm (something bad) happening around
him but it hasn’t reached him yet or it has
passed and he is trying to recover. Once
again relating back to the idea that he is
trying to keep himself together.

This does allow recognition to the artist but the visual isn’t 100% accurately and doesn’t represent Allday immediately. The structure of the album cover is very basic with only the album cover and the picture of Allday in the foreground. This minimalistic approach causes the audience to be intrigued and want to listen to the album to find out more about the mysterious album. The colour pallet of the album consists of black white blue and pink. A basic consistency but still quite bright and eye catching. The representation in the illustration is of an average Australian boy, long hair and a beanie is a common look for the teen age group. This allows the everyday person to identify with the cover and in turn identify with the music.
  • 8. The artists name is in large capital letters in the middle of the cover, dominating the space. This indicates that the artists wants his name know and attached to the music. The absence of the album title creates a mysterious effect where the audience doesn’t know what music they will hear in the songs just the artist name. The body in the cover is hunched over with tense shoulders, this symbolises exhaustion or sadness. Like the person Is so tired or distraught that they can no longer stand up straight. The backs of the arms look like they are trying to open something, in addition the shoulders are hunched over appearing as though the person is putting in a large amount of effort to open something. This adds to the mysterious characterises as you cant tell what the person is doing nor what his face looks like. Despite having the artists name on the cover they person is turned away and shielding most of his body, this could symbolise that the audience may know his name but not who the artist truly is. The large contrast between the shadows on the person and the bright red and yellow background creates are loud cover. The colours are intended to catch the eye of the viewer but traditionally red can be a symbol of love or hatred and yellow is the representation of happiness and brightness. This could be a symbol of how the unknown person is conflicted between two opposing sides of himself or what's around him. The body is cut in half just below his shoulders. This could be a representation of how the two contrasting sides have taken a piece of him and with the symbolism of him trying to open something it could be the person trying to hold himself together. The use of bright colours is generally a marketing strategies to attract children but the separation of the man indicates that this cover is targeted at an older audience but still young. This cover hints at a n alternative genre but no clear indications for which genre. The blue diagonal lines could be a representation of rain or storm, because the man is only seeing the rain and not being rained on it could symbolise how he sees a storm (something bad) happening around him but it hasn’t reached him yet or it has passed and he is trying to recover. Once again relating back to the idea that he is trying to keep himself together.
