    Betawijs is studenteninitiatiefuit Delft! Meerderestudenteninitiatieven.

LullosGoogleNuna, vwo-caseBetawijs: use students as a role model in education!

Lotte:So it started as a student initiative. What do we want with Bètawijs? We want to strengthen the Bèta cycle by letting students work in secondary education. At this moment we see that Bèta technology is not as popular as the social and economic studies. Technology still has the image that you can only become a teacher or a researcher when you are finished. First we believe university students can be a role model for secondary school students, where they possibly make science and technology more accessible. Secondly students can assist the teacher and help release the working pressure in secondary schools. By introducing the university students in secondary school, we think working in education gets more popular. The Personal Assistant of Teachers can help improve the quality and popularity of science and technology classes.

Pieter: PAL was introduced just last year by the DenkTank and seemed the perfect term for an idea Betawijs had been working on for 2 years:From experience we decided to offer the PAL in 3 roles:The step-in role of mentor, who joins in activities outside of regular in-class program If experienced, student can beome a support-role PAL which is closes to assisant role. Requires more eduaction support and training Finally, a student can take over some of teachers tasks in front of classroom although he never takes responsibility for program. Whether student takes on this role depends on work-relation with responsbile teacher and amount of educational support.

Lotte: We introduce the Personal Assistant for Teachers in The Hague and Rotterdam Area. We do this through the already existing Beta 1op1 project. This is funded by Platform Beta Techniek. Toine will tell more about this project later on. We also stimulate PAL directly to schools. At this moment we have approximately 50 students working as a PAL at about 23 schools. Because we are a commercial initiative we believe we help to improve the sustainability of the PAL. Especially as we are working together with government, universities and high schools.

Lotte: By introducing the PAL there are, of course, some challenges. In the first place we see some practical challenges. Introducing the PAL asks time from the involved teacher, who doesn’t have much time left in his busy schedule. At the same time: students have a really busy life as well. With various activities it’s the job as a PAL doesn’t always have the main focus. In the long term there are some strategic of organizational challenges. Firstly: a students is not qualified to work as a teacher, therefore we are currently focusing on organizing support in the form of educational training for our PAL’s. This could potentially result in some forms of certification as was also mentioned in the quality agenda of the secretary of state in September this year. At the same time schools will have to adopt an even more flexible approach towards their staff, which consists of both part-timers and full timers .

Over the last 2 years we have taken on a central role between high schools, universties and government in searching for possible ways to increase the presence of PALs in Dutch higher education. From the moment we joined in the beta1op1 project, we have been acted as an information point which gathers experience from students, schools and universities joining in this development. As such, we are now involved in discussions concerning the future strategy and the introduction of the PAL, and we were involved in transforming beta1op1 to fit the PAL idea.In cooperation with Delft University we organize workshops and training for all of our students who work at local high schools. This year we are looking possibilities to involve the universities teaching school to create an even more professional means of support which some day might lead to some kind of special teaching certificate.Through our assistance in the organisation of the beta1op 1 project, we have become the local coordination point for students, for which we play a connecting role by creating common facilities (digital) and cross-communication, whether trhough trainings/workshops or through correspondence. At the same time, we try to keep in touch with our students to see how they experience their work and try to support them where necessary. In doing so, we try to increase the students’ commitment towards their educational tasks. Finally, we take on a human resource role as we are responsible for the recruitment of motivated students and act as a temporary deployment agency as we take care of all administration.

Lotte: The advantages are not only quantitative but of course qualitative. Improved popularity science and technology education as the university student shows his enthusiasm and takes away the stereotype image of science. The university students give potential career information about their studies in an informal way. Through the student a school gets the latest innovations and developments in the science and technology field.
