    • Intel Core i5 2500k – The Sweet Spot Of The Current Intel ProcessorsBy Lenny GasanderLooking to buy the best value for money Intel processor for your new PC? Ifthat is the case then you should seriously look at the Intel i5-2500k.Find out from the people who have purchased and installed the Intel i52500k on their own PC why they think that this processor is the bestprocessor for them.It may not be necessary to spend more money on the Intel i7-2600k if youdon’t really need the hyper threading functions. Owners here share with youwhy they think the i5-2500k is the best value for money. Also find out whether you need the “k” or non-“k” version of the processor. Page 1 of 6
    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Best Value From Intel, February 24, 2012By R. Schwenn (MN United States)This processor is a steal. If you do not need the hyperthreading that the2600K gives you do not look back and purchase the 2500K with confidence. It overclocks very easily which is the reason you are looking at the K versionI am sure. I am running a Corsair H100 cooler with it and I am rock solidstable at 4.8ghz with temps of 24 C at idle and 65 C under full load of Prime95. About the best all around5.0 out of 5 starsprocessor you can buy, April 14, 2012By Thomas F. Harper Jr.The intel i-series chips (i3, i5 and i7) come in a wide variety of complicatedcombinations of cpu cores, gpu core and various features. The i3 is the entry level chip, although its quite capable for many usersneeds. The i5 is the next step up, and the i7 is the top of the line. The i7 isreally Intels "boutique piece" and while it offers more powerful cores andmore cache memory, unless you can get an i7 for close to an i5 price, thesweet spot is the i5.But which one?!? Some i5s have dual cores and hyperthreading, othershave quad cores and no hyperthreading. Whats hyperthreading? Considerthat an i5 cpu with dual cores and hyperthreading has two physicalcomputing cores that can actually do work, but hyperthreading makes it looklike four cores, with a portion of the i5 chip trying to sort out the workloadso it can be done more efficiently by the two actual compute cores. Its sort of like you have two guys working in a warehouse pulling product forcustomers, but you have four guys taking orders and working to make surethat the two warehouse guys are working most optimally in terms of whatproducts they pull and how they move around the warehouse to increaseefficiency. Its nowhere near as good as having four actual workers/cores,but it gives you a little 10-15% performance boost in many apps. The 2500k has four real cores and no hyperthreading. You can buy up to thei7-2600k and get quad cores and hyperthreading. The 2500k alsoincorporates the Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics while most i5s and i7shave the HD2000. Page 2 of 6
    • The 2000 is fine for doing basic stuff, but the 3000 has considerably morejuice. You arent going to run the latest 3d games at high settings and framerates on it, but itll do any video, windows desktop and low to mid rangegraphics stuff without the need for an extra graphics card.Another feature of the i5-2500k is its k designation, which means the clocks(what controls the cpus speed) arent locked by Intel. Intel locks most cpusto prevent people from overclocking them to get more performance perdollar, and also to protect customers from damaging their cpus. These newk cpus coupled with a Z68 based motherboard offer very easy push buttonoverclocking of the cpu cores, the HD 3000 graphics core and the memory.Depending on the motherboard manufacturer, youll have one overclockingtool or other that lets you select a mild, medium or high overlock and thentest/measure the stability of the system. What this does is make your cpu orgpu run as much as 20-25% faster. For higher overclocks, youll want to employ a better heatsink and fan or tryout one of the inexpensive water cooling arrangements. Water coolers likethe Corsair H60 are easy to install, already preassembled, just screw down ablock on the cpu and mount the radiator/fan to your case. With a goodaftermarket cooler, you can tinker around with how fast you can make themachine go.Ive bought this cpu because it represents one of the best price/performancebang for the buck, I can turn its performance up in 3-4 years when it startsto feel old, it comes with enough gpu for my everyday needs and I can dropa fast gpu in there if I decide to game, and it offers excellent overallfutureproofing. There are some good deals around for this cpu since the new ivy bridgeprocessors are due out shortly. Ivy Bridge will run cooler and with lesspower and may have a few extra goodies like a faster GPU, but theyre goingto cost a bit more.Unless you really have no need for much compute power nor see any for the3-4 years you might own a computer, then an i3 will do you nicely but dolook for models like the 2105 and 2125 that have the HD3000 instead of the2000 if youre going to be using the integrated graphics. You wont pay morethan a few dollars extra and its worth it. Otherwise unless you need theexotic processing capabilities of the i7, get this cpu. Its not much moreexpensive than most other models of the i5, but this gives you so muchmore capability and potential. Page 3 of 6
    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CPU, February 21, 2012By CrazyZach (Berkeley, CA USA)The Intel Core i5-2500k is an excellent processor. Its quite sufficient for anygaming and general desktop/workspace needs. For heavy video encodingand other such professional processor intensive things that actually utilizehyper-threading, you may want to go for the i7-2600k or even the IntelXeon. For your information, this i5 gets a 7.5 in Windows Experience Indexrunning at stock speeds. Considering that Windows Experience Index israted on a scale of 1 to 7.9, a 7.5 is very good. Overall, this is an excellentprocessor, and will most likely suit your needs.5.0 out of 5 stars The best choice!, January 2, 2012By Ben MishkanianThis processor is, in my opinion, the best choice for most home computerbuilds today. Why? Because it delivers excellent performance while alsobeing quite affordable. Specifically in the context of gaming, many people gooverboard and buy an i7 because they think they need it to max out theirgame settings. However, most games cannot even take full advantage of theextra cores in the i7. In fact, even games released recently do not even maxout the capability of the i5! I recommend that, instead of buying an i7, oneshould put that money towards buying an SSD (which would really showmuch more impressive results). The i5-2500k is certainly the best value of the i5 family if you have amotherboard that supports overclocking. This is because the i5 can do anINSANE overclock! I was able to get it to go to 4.3ghz using just the auto-tuning feature on my ASUS motherboard. So basically, I just increased thespeed of my computer by 30% just by clicking a button! Thats just goodbusiness. It runs cool and stable, even though I only use the stock cpu fan!Just think about what it can achieve if one used an aftermarket coolingsolution! There are very few people that would be unsatisfied with theperformance of this CPU.The short story is, unless you have an extremely tight budget for your buildor you truly need i7 power, this processor is the way to go!
