  • ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit RouterBest Residential Router There Is! Figure 1 - ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit RouterBy Geoffrey R ShohanIf I could marry ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router and haveits baby, I would. Seriously. I am a professional software engineer who works full-time out of my home. Most of the time I work using wired Ethernet, but my kidsand wife have a lot of WiFi devices, so having a reliable WiFi network is important. The house is a one story ranch that is very long, with lots of walls that are in theway from one end to the other. In the past Ive used two Linksys routers for fullcoverage (and have used two different models). Both Linksys models hadegregious firmware bugs that Linksys never bothered to fix (others complainedabout them on Linksys forums, so it was not just me). They were not minor annoyances -- with one of the routers any wired computercould *never* reach a WiFi computer. With the other, the parental controls/filtersdid absolutely nothing -- it was as though they did not exist. Im pointing thesethings out here because it’s apparent that Asus does fix its bugs. • Asus has bothered to respond to other peoples reviews on this website, pointingout how to download and install new firmware that resolves whatever bugstheyve encountered with the ASUS RT-N66U. Linksys never bothered to respond tothese complaints on their own forums, let alone Amazons. My ASUS RT-N66U outer arrived last week (5/4/2012), and the firmware that wason it was close to ~ 3.0.0.3.100 (I dont recall exactly), but it was higher than theversion about which some others have had difficulties. I upgraded it to the latest,3.0.0.3.112. I have now tested it quite thoroughly and have not encountered anysignificant problems. I found its U.I. to be a little flaky with Firefox, but theproblems vanished with Internet Explorer. The ASUS RT-N66U power on both 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz at 80 milli watts issufficient to cover the entire house, from end to end, which is a first for this house. There is an adjustment in the firmware that allows for increasing the amount ofpower the router uses to broadcast its signals, which is something I have not seenon other residential routers.Overall, the ASUS RT-N66U’s user interface is nicely organized, and generallyresponds very quickly (I cant say the same for my old Linksys routers).I downloaded a LAN speed test that measures how quickly a computer can copy afile to another computer over the LAN. Using Wireless N at 5 Ghz / 40 Mhz, Iconsistently get right around 85 to 90 mbps from the ASUS RT-N66U, which totallyrocks for WiFi. Wireless G was consistently at the high end of the G spec -- low tomid 50s. It wasnt that long ago that I was excited about having a 100 mbpsEthernet switch, and at that time I did not think I would be getting similar speedsover WiFi.The ASUS RT-N66U has too many features to list, many of which are going to bepresent in most all residential routers, and some of which are only in higher-endmodels like this one. Some of the features that impressed me: Page 2 of 6
  • * I tested the ASUS RT-N66U’s DDNS by registering a domain with Asuscomm(which they give you for free!), and setup a secure VPN. It works!* USB support for various add-ons, like sharing a disk drive, ITunes server, PrintServer, and WiMax.* Black-box support for using it as an additional access point that talks to anotherrouter over Ethernet. I know you can do this with other routers, but the setup isnot obvious.* Black-box support for using the ASUS RT-N66U to create a wireless bridge, fromone access point to another (I once had Netgear router that claimed to be able todo this but it did not work. I have not tested this feature with this router, but Iassume it does work). What Other Owners Thought Of Their Asus RT-N66URouter.5.0 out of 5 stars Finally fixed my wireless issues!, June 22, 2012By J. Fullerton (Sterling, VA)For the past several years I have experienced many problems with wireless signalsin my house. Starting with the standard Verizon supplied router (Actiontec) I havetried at least 3-4 other routers with poor results. Ive tried all of the other top-rated brands like D-Link, MediaBridge, Netgear, some wireless-N bridges, and soforth. For each of those routers, the signal in my small house has often been 2-3bars. Even more frustrating is that they would often reboot, restart, changechannels, and be very disruptive to my work/play time on my computers. Othertimes the signal would be so poor that network speeds were stupid slow andunusable. Ive tried about everything I could think of in terms of optimized settingsfor each router as well as location for the routers (away from metal, etc), and evenremotely locating the antennas to be dead center in my house.I had no luck with anything.I finally bit the bullet and bought this router as it was top-rated here and on Page 3 of 6
  • review sites. I installed it and hooked up all my equipment (Home server, twoPS3s, three Tivos with Tivo 5GHz wireless N adapters, two desktops with the AsusUSB N adapters, and five laptops one of which has the Asus USB N adapter, plustwo Android phones, and a wireless Brother printer) and set things up.I did NOT update the firmware (I am on .112) because everything is working fine. And I mean perfect. Unlike my old router, which usually had no more than 24hours of uptime, the Asus has been running steady for nearly a week now. I amrunning the 2.4GHz network, a 5GHz network, and a 2.4GHz guest network. All ofthem are working great, with 4-5 bars everywhere in my house, as well as goodsignal out in my front yard and driveway for my Android phones.Network speeds are great, with some spikes well into the 40GB/s rating, wellfaster than the advertised 450MB/s rating. Internet speeds are very good, withpages coming up nearly instantly on fast sites. This is on both the 2.4GHz and5GHz channels.I am completely pleased that this unit, and cant recommend it highly enough!5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Fastest Router ever., June 20, 2012By S. Scarfo (Tampa, FL)Ive owned several high end routers over the years and this one takes the cake.Faster than my dlink dir-655 and I loved that router. No stability problems andadmin web GUI functions great over iOS devices too. This is a must buy for fios or road runner customers.5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best, June 17, 2012By Eliott Mendelson "ele" (Orlando,)Over the years I have used many wireless routers. Quite honestly I thought thelast one purchased was the be all and end all of them. As it turns out this is by far Page 4 of 6
  • the best in terms of performance. The range is exceptional!! The same can be saidfor availability, accessibility, and reliability.5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, reliable and easy to install, June 16, 2012By Joe D "RealGuns.Com" (Raymond, ME)This router was purchased to service six systems that are located in two buildingsspaced fifty feet apart. We had been using a Netgear N router that was constantlydropping connections, operating at unacceptable speeds and in constant need of"repair connection". The ASUS software and utilities are easy to use and there arelots of options for those who need them. It took five minutes per client system toinstall Asus Black Diamond Dual Band Wireless-N USB Adapter and software.Speed is very fast and very consistent. No more dropped connection. Very nice. Weare going to extend to include wireless printing and storage within our network. A router that can provide you with a stable and reliable WiFi network, not one that drops every now and then A wide coverage. The range is exceptional Super fast and consistent WiFi speed. One of the owners, Shohan recorded a consistent speed of 85-90 MBps! Fast access via USB connections to your printer, hard disk and other USB gadgets for wireless access Easy to install. You don’t have to waste time trouble shooting before you get the router o work. It took some owners 5 to minutes to install Easy to use software and utilities – one that does not need a techie knowledge to use Page 5 of 6
