There are seven basic ingredients for a
successful marriage.
First is realistic expectations. Many young people believe
marriage to be a permanent state of happiness. But
happiness is not a state. Rather, it is something which is
planned, sought out, and maintained through endeavor.
Next is good communication. The ability to communicate
beyond merely daily information always appears amongst
the first two or three success factors heading the lists. Third
is conflict-resolving capacity. Conflicts are inevitable; all
marriages experience them. The question, however, is not:
Should we have conflicts? Rather, the issue is: How should
we handle our conflicts? Next is liking a partner’s
personality. It is important to like and admire a partner’s
way of being. The more features we admire in our partner,
the more solid a foundation we have for our life together.
Fifth is ethical values and common religions. Religion and
ethics appear as highly important values in securing a
couple’s stability. Next is agreement on each partner’s
responsibilities. The division of responsibilities and roles in
married life is one of the greatest stumbling blocks in the
lives of couples. Last is agreement on how to employ free
time.
Marriage is never easy. But as human beings, we thrive on
the love and support of other people that are in our lives.
We can make changes to improve our marriage. It is entirely
up to us.
