  • 1. President’s Corner Zonta Club of Dayton Advancing the status of women locally Happy New Year! This year I am most excited for us, as it will be the year that we charter our club, becoming the 1st Zonta Club in the Miami Valley Region, the Zonta Club of Dayton. Dearest Zontians, in the past year we have managed to be able to build our club from the grounds up, get to know people within the community and also be able to do hands on projects to help organizations within Dayton help women in difficulty. Over the past year, our contribution through a cell phone drive to the Artemis Center, as well as making care packages through your generous donations including soap, shampoo, alcohol swaps and such for YWCA women have been deeply appreciated by the community. As, 2012 came to a close our last meeting was a great summary of our objectives of integrating ourselves in the community of Dayton and helping advance the status of women and girls through the community for 2013. In addition to service programs, one of our objectives is also mentoring our young women and young professionals and entrepreneurs in the Dayton Community. We are happy to be starting this program as it will help us make an impact on Young professionals of our time, that are faced with growing concerns over an unstable economy, political and social issues daily. As said by our International President, Lynn McKenzie, we are a global organization and this was most made visible in 2012 in our International Convention. “Your actions and those of other Zontians throughout the world have made a real difference to improve the lives of women and girls. I encourage you as we move into 2013 to continue to seek out ways to improve the lives of women and girls. In the words of UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon when launching Un Women in 2011, "Investing in women is not only the right thing to do; it is the smart thing to do. Last month, we initiated two projects to enhance our efforts to increase our visibility and credibility. The first is the Zonta Says NO campaign to end violence against women and girls.. The second is the Zonta Service Recognition Award, designed to recognize and profile the breadth of service activities our clubs and districts are engaged in.” I also wanted to inform you that we have signed the memorandum of understanding with UNFPA for the Liberian Project and are in the process of signing the MOU with the UN Trust Fund who delivers our ZISVAW projects. Additionally, I want to encourage you to consider joining myself and other Zontians at the 2013 Commission on the Status of Women in New York as we work to end violence against women. Lastly, I would just like to remember some words of St. Francis of Assisi which I think are really just particularly apt at the moment. ‘Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope’ … Sincerely, Besa Sharra President of Zonta Club Of Dayton
