Ashley C Hodder Construction As Canvas

  1. 1. Washington Elementary Mount Lebanon School District This mural is a work in progress that will serve as a backdrop for an installation of birdhouses. The client requested a large oak tree, and I have hidden birds, squirrels, lizards (fourth grade mascot), and other creatures for students to find.
  2. 2. Mary Lou Williams Homewood This portion of a larger collaborative mural is a portrait of Mary Lou Williams, a famous jazz musician that hails from Homewood. It is located near the entrance to the busway on N. Homewood Avenue. The whole image is composed of freehand dots and is a departure from my more realistic style of painting. This portrait is part of a collage of images created by local high school students and professional artists . Following the curriculum I designed, the students first researched historical events and notable residents to formulate a sketch for the mural. They were then assisted by an art teacher and two professional artists to paint the design they created.
  3. 3. Whole Foods Mother Nature
  4. 4. Whole Foods East Liberty - Detail An image of Mother Nature composed of trees, birds, and clouds, on the backside of Whole Foods facing the busway. This is a section of a composite mural created with a team of artists. The image shown was conceived of and created solely by Ashley Hodder.
  5. 5. East Liberty Busway Warhol Style Portraits I am assisting a student from Peabody High School create one of the approximately 330 portraits contained in this mural. The design and concept is by Kelly Blevins, my role was to develop the curriculum for the ten students involved so each could successfully contribute to the piece. Each student took photographs of residents, business owners and passersby, and learned how to create a high contrast image , increase the scale and paint it.
  6. 6. Mother Nature - Wilkinsburg Part of the busway project, this image is one of four sections completed by the artist in the collage of images contained in the mural. A team of artists and local high school students all contributed to the theme of “Strength and Community, “
  7. 7. Over the Bar Bicycle Café South Side Commissioned by the owners as part of a complete redesign of the bar/ restaurant. New theme for the establishment is “mountain biking” so imagery played off of that.
  8. 8. Over the Bar Bicycle Café South Side The mural is composed of alternating images of outdoor mountain biking and close up views of chains and gears. The overall effect conveys the high energy and excitement of getting outdoors on your bike!
  9. 9. The Ivy Inn Mount Lebanon This mural was created to address a nuisance building in Mount Lebanon, that nearby businesses felt was repelling customers. The mural is painted as an homage to Phipps Conservatory , to commemorate Pittsburgh’s 250th year and the serve as an oasis for a part of the community that is surrounded by asphalt.
  10. 10. Abstracted Pennsylvania Landscape Dormont Commissioned by the law firm Friday Porta Cox and Ward to address metal storage trailers. The area serves as an employee break area and a first impression to Jaime’s Restaurant next store from the parking lot. The imagery is inspired by the owner’s property in Washington County.
