    • Thursday, September 01, 2011Hundreds of new Texas laws go into effect Thursday.Homestead exemptionStarting Thursday (September 1 2011), Texas homeowners who apply fora homestead exemption on their primary residence must show ID, mainlya drivers license or ID card and a copy of their vehicle registrationreceipt. The address on the ID and receipt must match the address forwhich they seek an exemption. Those without vehicles may submit anotarized affidavit certifying they dont have a vehicle - and a currentutility bill that lists the persons name and address that is on thehomestead exemption application. State officials say they hope to cutdown on fraudulent homestead exemption claims, such as those bypeople who own vacation homes in Texas. "Right now, residents of otherstates can claim the homestead exemption even if they only come toTexas one weekend out of the year," said state Rep. Harvey Hilderbran,R-Kerrville.
