    • Neat Facts About Polar Bears In Comic Sans! By Juliette Levy and Bella Faulkner
    • NEAT FACTS• Abiotic factors: ice, sunlight, temperature, snow ice, water• Biotic factors: fish, bacteria
    • Terrestrial effect• They are at the top of the food chain in their region• If polar bears become extinct, other animals populations rise.• This could create an imbalance, especially if one species rises and out competes another, which could then endanger the other species.
    • What do humans do?• Polar bears are killed for their fur• Their habitat (ice) is threatened by global warming (melting ice)• Because of over fishing, polar bears have less prey to eat (water pollution)• We lock polar bears into captivity (zoos)
    • Hunting Polar Bears• Humans have hunted polar bears for thousands of years, specifically the 1500s through the• 1700s, as well as the 1950s through the 70s.• Hunting is the greatest single cause of polar bear mortality.
    • Oil Spills… oh no!• Oil spills from drilling platforms or tankers potentially threaten polar bears.• When a polar bear is covered in oil, its fur loses insulating elements that keep them warm and oil• spills often destroy food sources of polar bears.
    • Human Produced Chemicals• Polar bears, at the top of the food chain, develop the highest concentrations of human-made toxic• The chemicals that have been found in significantly high levels in the tissues of polar bears.
    • Other Human Effects on Polar Bears • Starvation is a leading cause of death among polar bears. It is believed that we caused this by over • Fishing
