1. 1. Media Coursework Preliminary Task
Annabel Lucey
2. 2. ResearchMagazines aimed at different audiences
Glamour teenager 16+ Writing is bold pink appealing to female teenagers. Advertising Outfits dos and don’ts stereotypical things girls care about. Britney centred on front page attracting to girls who listen to and like her. The image is powerful even though the white shirt blends in with the white background. The masthead is pink aiming at girls with a simple font and sans serif. The pink and red stand out on the white background and over the image.
FHM Music men’s magazine
On the front of the magazine is a female in a bra and knickers appealing to a male audience. It is a Powerful image centred over the mast head. The Masthead is to the left and is sans serif. The black background makes the image stand out and also the white and gold text. We know the magazine is about music as the magazine is made to look like a speaker and Pixie Lott a singer and songwriter is on the front.
3. 3. Elderly woman with husband kids living in own home. Front cover advertises saving money so people who pay the bills would read it. Also theirs food recipes
Posh well dressed woman young adult or fashion student.
The Stylised masthead finely defined with serifs giving it a classic feel. The image is powerful as it cantered and perfectly even on both sides. The Masthead is bright red making it standout on the white background and over the image as it is placed over the image. The side headings do not stand out they vary in size and the font colour is black or white. The image appeals to young adult females interested in fashion. You can tell from the front page people buy the magazine for its well known name and image as the sub headings are dull and do not stand out compared to the image and Masthead.
4. 4. Front cover Ideas
I got the idea for my front cover as its the summer Henley college magazine edition I thought it should have a picture to do with what the students will be going or looking forward to in the summer so I wanted to take a picture at or of a festival. As many students go to reading festival this image is based on that.
6. 6. College Magazine Draft
Background adds texture to the magazine and helps it look more 3D
Masthead vertical to make it different and stand out
Bright, bold colours to make the text stand out
Barcode on bottom right similar to researched magazines
7. 7. Evaluation of Henley College Magazine draft
Evaluation of Henley collage magazine draft
My media product challenges forms and conventions of colour magazines as it is Bright and colourful and stands out. Instead of one picture it has 4 unlike in my research where all the magazines had one image of a girl weather it’s aimed at male or female this makes it different from other magazines and as my magazine has a background I didn’t want to cover it with a large image.
My magazine represents collage students who typically what to get the best out of their summer. Whether it’s male or female. This is represented by the images on the front of my magazine who are young students partying and studying and then a picture of a university as that is what most students will go on to do and in my magazine it has a section on helping students apply.
The collage itself would distribute my magazine as it is aimed for college students and benefits the students in the area it’s based. This would also mean it is freely available to students which will mean more will read and be able to purchase the magazine.
The audience for my media product is collage students aged 16+ to the age where they leave to go off to university (16-20)
I attracted and addressed the audience by the typical party beach images on the front also a stressed girl trying to work as when the magazine is distributed it is the end of exams before the summer. The bring text and colours stand out and the non typical font helps to stand out to. The colour of the font is colours which we would link to summer linking to the overall theme of the magazine and attracting the audience.
Technologies i have learnt about are the glosser and thicker the paper the more expensive the magazine is to produce but the better it looks so to try and find a balance between the two. Also the use of backgrounds to try and attract the reader and give a summer handbook feel to my media product. So before the audience even read it they roughly know what it is about. The handbook look to my magazine also makes it more appealing and different to other magazines available as in my research none of the magazines did this i feel my magazine is a niche magazine different to others. To improve my magazine i would use a computer with a larger range of fonts and better technologies that would make my magazine stand out and look better.
10. 10. Final Evaluation of The Henley College Magazine
Evaluation of Henley collage magazine
My final media product follows forms and conventions of colour magazines as it is Bright and colourful and stands out. It has one main image like the magazines in my research where all the magazines had one image. This makes it similar to other magazines on the market attracting students at Henley College.
My magazine represents collage students who typically what to get the best out of their summer. Whether it’s male or female. This is represented by the image on the front of my magazine which are people and students at festival in the sun.
The collage itself would distribute my magazine as it is aimed for college students and benefits the students in the area it’s based. This would also mean it is freely available to students which will mean more will read and be able to purchase the magazine.
The audience for my media product is collage students aged 16+ to the age where they leave to go off to university (16-19)
I attracted and addressed the audience by the typical festival image on the front also by the images on the contents page on a beach filled with people on there summer holiday. The magazine will be distributed at the end of exams before the summer. The text and colours stand out and the non typical font helps to stand out to. The colour of the font typical black which follows the conventions of many magazines attracting the audience.
Technologies I have learnt about are the glosser and thicker the paper the more expensive the magazine is to produce but the better it looks so to try and find a balance between the two. Also the use of images to try and attract the reader and also give a summer handbook feel to my media product. So before the audience even read it they roughly know what it is about. This also makes it more appealing and different to other magazines available as in my research none of the magazines did this I feel my magazine is a niche magazine different to others. To improve my magazine I would use a computer with a larger range of fonts and better technologies that would make my magazine stand out and look better. When creating my magazine I used In-design for the first time at first this was quite difficult to use but I eventually got the hang of it. In my main magazine I would use Photoshop to improve the quality of my images and therefore improve the overall look and quality of the magazine.
