Slide 1: Are you getting enough?

Slide 2: What are the Surgeon’s General  Recommendation for Physical Activities?  Why is it important to exercise?  Activities to meet your Recommended amount of Physical Activity.

Slide 3: Not Doing Enough More than 60 percent of U.S. adults do not  engage in the recommended amount of activity. Approximately 25 percent of U.S. adults are not  active at all

Slide 4: Recommendation for Physical Activity. Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate-  intensity physical activity, above usual activity, on most days of the week. (A moderate amount of physical activity is roughly equivalent to physical activity that uses approximately 150 calories of energy per day or 1,000 calories per week.) Greater health benefits can be obtained by  engaging in physical activity of more vigorous intensity or of longer duration.

Slide 5: Benefits of Exercising Reduces the risk of dying from  coronary heart disease and of developing high blood pressure, colon cancer, and diabetes. Helps maintain healthy bones,  muscles, and joints. Reduces symptoms of anxiety  and depression and improvements in mood and feelings of well-being. Helps control weight, develop  lean muscle, and reduce body fat.

Slide 6: Benefits of Not Exercising Sedentary lifestyle increases risk for overweight and  obesity and many chronic diseases, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer.

Slide 7: Examples of Activities Less Vigorous Activities Bicycling 5 miles in 30 minutes  Raking leaves for 30 minutes  Walking 2 miles in 30 minutes (15 min/mile)  Running 11/2 miles in 15 minutes (10 min/mile)  Basketball (shooting baskets) for 30 minutes  Jumping rope for 15 minutes  Playing volleyball for 45 minutes 
