1. Survey results I have created a survey using www.surveymonkey.com. The survey poses questions regarding the content of music magazines and their audience. Hopefully the results of my survey will help me in my process of creating a music magazine.
2. My first question would give me an initial insight into who is taking my survey. I am able to see that the rest of my results will be based on this ratio of males to females. 30% 70%
3. Enquiring about age gives me a good indication as to what age range is answering my questions. If all of my respondents were 0-5 years old, I would obviously find different results to if my respondents were 24+. “How old are you?” 10 9 8 7 6 5 3 2 1 0 0-5 6-11 12-17 24+
4. I listed a wide range of music genres in this question. By doing this, it gives my respondents the opportunity to choose a less mainstream genre such as country. Indie came out top as the most favourite type of music amongst the respondents of my survey. As I plan to make a music magazine in the genre of dubstep, it is very helpful to see that it has been chosen as a favourite genre. This shows that there are people in my targeted age range who are interested in this type of music.
5. 30% 50% 20% Half of the people who answered my survey read NME. This shows that it is not only a popular magazine, but we could also assume that it’s read a lot by younger adults. This will help me when planning my music magazine. 30% of my respondents read none of the above magazines. This could show that a magazine in the genre they are specifically interested in has not yet been created. Consequently, this could be an opening in the market for my proposed music magazine.
6. Finding out how often people read magazines helps me to decide how often I should publish my proposed music magazine. 30% 50% 20%
7. If I am able to decipher what readers want to see in the magazine, then I am able to fulfil that desire. The results show that studio based photography is highly appreciated in music magazines so I will aim to include some of them in mine. Also, articles about new music and interviews are the 2nd and 3rd highest ranking. This shows that music magazines need to include a sufficient amount of text as well as images.
8. 40% 60% 60% of my respondents said that they would rather see studio based photographs in a music magazine. Judging on this result, I will try and include this. However, 40% is still a high figure so I feel a balance between the two would be fair.
9. 80% 20% As no one said they would prefer to see mostly writing, I will try and keep the balance equal between images and writing. These results show that readers do want writing, but would prefer it if the text was equalled out with images.
10. Judging from these results, black, white and red are the favourite choices. These colours are typically associated with NME magazine. This would link in with the fact that indie music ranked highest on the question “which type of music do you most prefer?”. Other colours such as blue, yellow and green are also popular amongst my respondents. I will consider these results when planning my own music magazine. 20% 10% 60% 30% 70% 50% 20% 50%
