  3. 3. WWW.WESTONANDWORLEADVERTISER.COM 3 Nearly £10 million is set to be spent on improving and expanding primary schools in North Somerset. The council's Executive has agreed to spend over £9.6 million on expanding and improving six primary-aged and one special school on top of an addition £2 million already committed to expand and create all-through primary schools in three other Weston schools. Ashcombe Primary School in Weston is the largest beneficiary with nearly £5 million being agreed for a new 420-place school by September 2013. The children's centre on site will also be expanded. Locking Primary School is set to expand from 45 to 60 places per year group benefiting from a £850,000 scheme and Ravenswood Special School in Nailsea is to receive £450,000 for refurbishment. An addition £1.84 million is to be spent on providing an extra 210 places across the Portishead and Pill cluster of schools and Yatton Infant and Junior schools will get an additional 105 places. The Executive also agreed to create primary schools at Hillside and Mendip Green First Schools and at St Martin's Junior School. Hillside will increase to a 210 place primary with Mendip Green and St Martins being able to each accommodate up to 630 pupils. The new primary schools will come into effect from September this year. Cllr Jeremy Blatchford, North Somerset Council's executive member for children and young people's services said this was great news especially at a time when councils were having to cut their spending by a third. £10M CASH BOOST FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

You will not find these in every pension, but it is worth getting out your policy to check. With low interest rates and a longer life expectancy, your annual payment will only be about 5.9% of youryour annual payment will only be about 5.9% of your total pension pot. But you may find in the small print of your policy that your annuity was guaranteed up to a certain level, which could mean the difference of you getting the 5.9%; or nearly double that if your pension has a guarantee. I was lucky enough to attend the recent Weston Showcase event at The Winter Gardens, where I was able to learn about all the new development about to take place. I always thought Weston was a good place to be in business, but soon, I believe, it will be hard to beat! Certainly, at the event, there was a lot of positive and forward thinking. We can, I’m sure, all list things wrong with our town but, with an upbeat message and a united front, I am sure we can attract more business into Weston to complement and help grow existing business. We just need to make sure we are in a position and ready to take advantage of it. J Sutton, Uphill
  11. 11. WWW.WESTONANDWORLEADVERTISER.COM Guild endorses Bakers Dolphin One of Weston’s most successful coach operators Bakers Dolphin, has been awarded top marks in a recent audit by the Guild of British Coach Operators. In a stringent exanination that members of the Guild undergo every two years, the firm underwent a 44 point check to ensure that it meeets the exacting standards to remain a member of the guild.to remain a member of the guild. As the only coach operator in the region to be a member of the guild, the company, which was founded in Weston in 1889, is justifiably proud of its 100% pass mark. As Bakers Dolphin’s MD, Max Fletcher, explains, “The Guild believes that the customer should be at the centre of everything, and we are keen to subject ourselves to their examination as they look at everythingourselves to their examination as they look at everything we do from that perspective.” “To receive 100% marks from their audit is a real credit to all our staff and is especially pleasing for our drivers, who are the public face of the buusiness meeting and transporting customers every day.” As well as coach hire and a daily service to london, Bakers Dolphin is a fully-bonded tour operatorBakers Dolphin is a fully-bonded tour operator providing British and continental coach holidays. The company also runs several bus routes and school transport franchises. They have just taken over the 121 Weston-Bristol services via Bristol Airport and are now offering UK and Continental holidays out of Coenwall. WWW.WESTONANDWORLEADVERTISER.COM 11
  12. 12. WWW.WESTONANDWORLEADVERTISER.COM It’s “Go” for Weston’s road improvementsFollowing a successful bid for Government funding, North Somerset Council has released the timetable for the biggest programme of road improvements the town has seen in years. Travellers will have already noticed the blue barrier in place on the roundabout at Junction 21 of the M5. This is part of the preparatory work to exclude wildlife from the area, which includes the relocation of a family of badgers. The main works on all the projects, known collectively as The Weston Package, is scheduled to commence in October. The scheme which will probably be of most interest is the remodelling of Junction 21, which will go some way to relieving the queues which have blighted the morning and evening rush hours. This scheme will consist of: Creating three lanes around the roundabout Installing traffic lights on the northbound off slip Adding a third lane on the approach to the roundabout from the southbound off slip to allow for a dedicated filter lane towards Bristol Adding traffic signals at the junction of Somerset Avenue and the slip road from St Georges, and creating a dedicated filter lane onto the northbound M5. The works on Junction 21 are set to last 12 months. Elsewhere, work will begin on creating a dual carriageway past Dunelm; creating a car park and bus interchange on the south side of Worle station, together with improvements to the existing car park; enlarging the bus terminus at Queensway and installing a bus lane past the traffic lights at Morrison’s. There will also be a “bus gate” at the side of McDonalds at Worle to allow buses to bypass the busy junction by the courts - speeding up bus travel and allowing easy access to the new bus interchange at Worle station. In addition to the publicly-funded Weston Package, construction is due to start on a new road across the old airfield, which will allow work to begin on new Chamber News Following a successful campaign, with members of Weston’s Chamber of Commerce lobbying North Somerset Council, plans, which would have seen parking fees in Weston’s car parks increased, have been dropped. President, Gail Parsons, declared,”This is a victory for common sense. Whilst we realise the council needs to raise revenue, this is not the way to do it. Had the increases gone ahead, it would have put people off visiting the town.” The April meeting of the Chamber will include a presentation on a privately-funded scheme to create a barrage across the Severn. Dr Roger Falconer, from the consortium Corlan Hafren, will outline the plans. Also speaking will be Dr Andrew Tyler, of Bristol- based Marine Current Turbines, who will explain the alternative technologies they offer to create power from the sea. There will be discussion from a wildlife conservation group. The free event, which is open to non-members, is at The Royal Hotel on Wednesday 18 April from 7pm. Call 07775 928772 or email: events@westonchamber.co.uk to book a place May’s meeting will be a members’- only networking event at the newly- re-launched Imperial Hotel. Members will have the opportunity to share their news and meet with new contacts. The event takes place on Wednesday 16 May at 7pm, and light refreshments will be available. Call 07775 928772 or email: events@westonchamber.co.uk to book a place. Membership to the Chamber starts at just £20 per year and more details can be found on the web site: westonchamber.co.uk 12
  13. 13. WWW.WESTONANDWORLEADVERTISER.COM commercial premises and homes. Included in the plans is a new 80 room hotel and restaurant, and a new base for the North Somerset Enterprise Agency which will include affordable office space for start-up businesses. President of Weston Chamber of Commerce, Gail Parsons said, “We are very pleased that these works are finally going ahead. The current state of our roads has been seen as a barrier to visitors and employment opportunities. The combination of these improvements and the planned development of the airfield will serve to make Weston a good place to be for new and existing businesses.” In other transport news, local MP’s are calling for the local rail franchise, which is due for renewal in 2013, to include a requirement to provide a minimum half- hourly service to Bristol, and a commitment to re-open the rail line from Portishead to Bristol More information can be found on the council’s web site: www.n-somerset.gov.uk/transport Help sought for major new event in Weston Organisers of the first National Remote Control and Model Jamboree are seeking the support of local clubs and and societies to help plan the programme. Planned for the 1 - 4 November 2012, Weston Arts Social Enterprise (WASE) hopes the event will attract people from across the country and help boost tourism in the town in what is, traditionally, a quiet time. WASE Director, Terry Gilbert, said, “The whole reason why WASE exists is to raise the profile of the town through events such as this, with the aim of putting “Heads on Beds” and supporting local business through the leaner months of the year. We know that remote control vehicles and models is big business and there is an annual event at Shepton Mallet to showcase these hobbies, but we want to put more of an emphasis on competition at our event.” “The committee is also keen to get the associations, schools and colleges involved by building models that can compete in the events. However, as we don’t know much about modelling and remote control vehicles, we need to get the enthusiasts involved in helping us make the event as exciting as possible.” As well as static displays and trade stands, planned events include: Land speed trials Water speed trials Motor racing Aerial slalom racing Mini-enduro Robot Wars For more information, or to get involved, email: info@wase.org.uk or call 01934 418118 Business Improvement District in place. Town centre businesses have voted to put in place a Business Improvement District (BID). In doing so, they have followed more than a hundred other towns across the country. Businesses in the BID pay an extra levy on their business rates which goes towards schemes that enhance the area, including extra street cleaning, wardens and events to attract more visitors. These are in addition to services provided by the council. The levy will see in excess of £250,000 extra per year put towards making the town more inviting for at least the next 5 years. There are tentative signs that we may be gradually pulling out of recession. The good and surprising news is that we are seeing a number of people starting their own business across the region. There is some evidence to suggest that the recession has been the final catalyst for some to take the plunge and finally go it alone. Good luck to everybody who is doing that – there can be fewer finer things in life than being able to control your own destiny! The good news for anybody who is starting up is that it is generally fairly straightforward. One of your early considerations will be your business structure: Whether to start as a sole trader, a partnership or to set up a Limited Company. There are advantages and disadvantages to all of these, but forward planning and an understanding of the tax rules may enable you to plan in advance how to minimise your tax liabilities. Starting your business as a sole trader and changing your legal structure to a Limited Company once you have developed your business can bring some significant tax benefits, for example. The costs involved in setting up as a sole trader or partnership are negligible, and the costs involved in setting up a Limited Company are relatively small. We would always advise you to take professional advice before setting up a company however, as it is quite easy to end up paying for two sets of accounts in your first year, rather than just one! We always charge clients cost price for setting up a Limited Company. For those who are looking at starting their own business, or those who are just looking for better value; some of the features of a standard package with us include: Fixed price fees for the year, payable monthly. On-going, unlimited phone, email and face to face contact. We come out to you at your business premises. A proactive approach to your business and taxation affairs. Professional fee protection is included in our fee structure – this means that if you have any enquiries or investigations from HMRC, our fees (and any subject experts) will be covered. Please feel free to get in touch and we will be delighted to come out to your premises to give you a free, no commitment consultation! *all advice is intended as general guidance and you should take specific advice from an accountant or speak to HMRC before setting up a business.
