Designing group work that is both beneficial andmeaningful to students is a challenging task for themajority of online instructors. Oftentimes instructorsshirk away from assigning group projects, becausethey believe that group work in particular disciplines,such as mathematics, is greatly ineffective. In thispresentation, we will discuss how assigning acollaborative study aid as a group project can helpcreate and foster learning groups, which lead togreater student success.

During the online course development for PersonalComputer Application (CIS 101), the online instructorsdeveloping the course realized the need for assistivetechnologies for training videos. The coursedevelopment team experimented with various closed-captioning and transcript techniques, finally settlingon videos in YouTube; this takes advantage ofsystems captioning and transcript capability. Toaccommodate students who cannot access YouTube,this presentation will also discuss other approachesbeing explored.
Discover how to leverage a grading system ofincreasing point value for discussion scores throughouta term combined with researched practices. Discussionquality improves using a multi-faceted approach ofintensive, guided feedback, mastery learning,showcasing of student work, and “Virtual Gold Stars.”The results are rapid improvement in student posts andpositive student feedback. This presentation will sharesome creative tips and ideas for scaffolding discussion.
