    • I hope that you will enjoy watching my gallery about a famous sailor Ferdinand Magellanic !

    • Ferdinand was born in 1480 in Sambrosa. His parents were Pedro Rui de Magalhães- a mayor of the city, and Alda de Mesquita. Magellan had two siblings: a brother, Diego de Sousa, and a sister Isabel.
  • 4. When Ferdinand was 10 years old, his parents died. When he was 12 years old, he was an assistant at the court of King John II in Lisbon. His favourite subjects were always geography and history. The young years . . .

    • At the age of 20 he sailed for the first time at the sea. In 1505 he sailed to India. When a local king refused to pay tribute, his troops gained The Almeidy and a Muslim city of Kilwa in present Tanzania.

    • Then, Magellan travelled to Eastern India, taking part in expeditions to the Seasonings Islands. In 1510 he was promoted to a captain. However, after an illegal journey to the east, without permission, he lost leadership and was forced to return to Portugal.

  • 8. Continuation of trip… . In 1519-1521 Magellan was the first who sailed around the Earth, which made it possible to state that the Earth had a spherical shape. Magellanic's intention was to discover the southern part of America. He wanted to reach India. Magellan with five ships and 265 crew members went from Spain and in October 1520 he reached the strait which separates the earth from the South America. The strait was named after his name.
  • 9. Ferdinand’s ship . Then, he sailed on the great sea, which he called the Pacific Ocean. Magellan was killed in a skirmish with the natives in the Philippines but the ship managed to return to Spain after three years of shipping.
  • 10. This is a memorial of discoverers and missionaries (Magellanic is among them). The monumnt is located in Belém – a district of Lisbon.
