Case Study: Mt. Sinai’s Text In The City Program Educates NYC’s Youth
Presented by: Dr. Katherine Malbon, Assistant Professor in Pediatrics, Text in the City, Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center (MSAHC), New York
Text in the City aims to reach patients attending the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, giving them a better connection with their ‘health home’. The program uses text messaging to interact and educate young people from the South Bronx and East Harlem. Teens are able to get answers to confidential questions and sign up for medication reminders as well as weekly “healthbytes” of useful and interesting health-based advice.Dr Malbon will share the barriers and difficulties of starting a text-based program within the healthcare setting. She will explain how the 6 month pilot program helped shape the current up and running ‘Text in the City’ service and what hopes and ambitions she has for educating teens in the future using technology and social media.
