Web 2.0
• “Transparency: “The transition of websites from isolated
information silos to sources of content and functionality,
thus becoming a computing platform serving web
applications to end users.”*
• Connectivity: Web 2.0 tools provide common sources
where access can be open to all or controlled rather than
email with attachments where access if diffused and
disconnected.
• Participation: “A social phenomenon referring to an
approach to creating and distributing Web content itself,
characterized by open communication, decentralization
of authority, freedom to share and re-use, and \"the
market as a conversation.”* Barriers to entry are
lowered.

Web 2.0 Tools
• RSS is a tool that allows subscribers to push content at them from
podcasts, blogs, wikis, news services, etc.
• Blogs are tools for users to create and share content, often as
personal diaries, in which they can control access, the possibility
for commentary, and editing.
• Wikis are tools for creating content collaboratively, making
possible the social validation of knowledge.
• Resource Sharing Tools include:
– Photo Sharing,
– Social Bookmarking
– File Sharing
• Mashups are tools that combine two web 2.0 tools into one, such
as combining Google maps with occurrences of crime in a
neighborhood.
• Social Network Analysis is a tool that analyzes information flows
in an organization or on the web.
