Ingress Protection (IP) Codes are marked on products to inform the consumer and the inspection authority to what level of “ingress” the product is rated = what level of protection from foreign objects and moisture the product enclosure provides. Many International Product Safety Standards require a specific minimum IP rating to insure that the product enclosure provides sufficient protection according to the intended environment in which the product will be used. For example: indoor use only, protected outdoor use, exposed outdoor use, submersion, etc.
Each “IP Code” correlates to a specific test program. By understanding the IP Codes and which IP Code is required for your product, you may then determine the specific environmental tests specified for compliance. This information is critical to know PRIOR to the product design to insure a 1st time compliant product.
