What are Fossil Fuels

Fuels formed from natural resources of dead organisms

Different types of fossil fuels

wood, coal, and crude oils

How is coal formed

The energy in coal comes from the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, when the Earth was partly covered with swampy forests.

For millions of years, a layer of dead plants at the bottom of the swamps was covered by layers of water and dirt, trapping the energy of the dead plants. The heat and pressure from the top layers helped the plant remains turn into what we today call coal.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=coal_home-basics
How is coal used as a fossil fuel

It’s used to generate electricity

How is oil formed

From the remains of dead bodies of animals that go under certain heat and pressure to make crude oil

How is oil used as a fossil fuel

It’s used to power all types of vehicles

How is Natural Gas formed

Millions of years ago, the remains of plants and animals (diatoms) decayed and built up in thick layers. This decayed matter from plants and animals is called organic material because it was once alive. Over time, the sand and silt changed to rock, covered the organic material, and trapped it beneath the rock. Pressure and heat changed some of this organic material into coal, some into oil (petroleum), and some into natural gas which are tiny bubbles of odorless gas.

What are refineries

Industrial plants that turn crude oil into fossil fuel products like diesel, petroleum, and others

Oil spills

As of right now the gulf is suffering from a terrible oil spill with attempts not in place and thousnad of ecosystems affected, people are preparing for the worst case scenarios for it.
