In Defense of Dignity—Makungu Akinyela This keynote will describe therapeutic conversations that recognize what some practices identify as "non-compliance" and "resistance to change" as clients striving for dignity in the face of oppressive relationships. These oppressive relationships often occur in the context of racial, class, gender or sexual differences between the counselor and client that are de-emphasized. This talk will encourage you to include a social justice framework in your therapeutic practice based on witnessing the testimony (desired story) told by clients about their lives and collaborating with clients in the fight for dignity. 10:30-12:00: Plenary Panel: Consumer Feedback and Partnership: Making Us Better Michael Lambert—Current Research and the Future of Feedback Jacqueline Sparks—Feedback and Social Justice Barry Duncan—Feedback and the Heart and Soul of Change Client based outcome feedback improves outcomes more than anything else since the beginning of our field. Michael Lambert, the pioneer of client feedback, shares the good news about feedback and forecasts where it could take us. Jacqueline Sparks asserts that not only does securing client feedback increase effectiveness, it also levels the counseling process and ensures justice for all clients. Finally, Barry Duncan connects the dots regarding the powerful effects of feedback with the most potent factors of change—the client and the alliance, the heart and soul of change. Day Two Afternoon, June 18 2:00--5:15 (Break at 3:30): Four Tracks: Youth/School/Family; Social Justice; Special Topics; Consumer Driven Outcomes Implementation Youth/School/Family “Unleashing the Giant” to Become Better at Serving Kids and Families—John Murphy and Barry Duncan This session translates research-supported principles of effective practice into user-friendly ways of putting clients first through the application of common factors in a social justice framework. Real-world examples and video clips illustrate the inherent resources of youth and families as well as the power that resides in partnership. Social Justice Leveling the Field: Creating Socially Just Partnerships—Makungu Akinyela & Jacqueline Sparks Helping relationships often involve an imbalance of power based on the social and cultural locations of the counselor and consumer. Routine feedback balances power and goes a step further, putting consumers in the lead. Par- ticipants will examine their policies, paperwork, and practices to create more socially just counseling partnerships. Special Topics Research Can Be Sexy—Like When It Changes the Way A Country Provides Services —Jeff Reese, Morten Anker, Jesse Owen Jeff Reese discusses his just published randomized clinical trial demonstrating the benefits of feedback as well as his research using client feedback in supervision. Morten Anker presents the landmark couple feedback study that changed the way a country does counseling. Finally Jesse Owen addresses the latest research about the alliance and counselor effects, and makes the case that the alliance impacts outcome over and above symptom change. Putting Addicts In Charge of Their Treatment! Are You Crazy?—David Claud Traditionally trained addictions professionals usually find it hard to understand how consumer driven treatment could possibly work for real addicts. Putting clients in charge of their treatment sounds too much like clients “running their own program.” This interactive workshop and discussion will explore the role of client-feedback and how to incorporate it into addictions treatment of all types. Consumer Driven Outcomes Implementation Implementing the OQ System—Michael Lambert This workshop provides a foundation for monitoring client treatment response and the use of clinical support tools with clients at risk for a negative outcome. Evidence is discussed regarding the problem of negative outcomes, that therapists are poor at recognizing deteriorating clients, and how such clients can be identified before they leave treatment. Simple interventions that rely on therapist problem-solving abilities will be illustrated. Implementing Outcome Management in Public Agencies: Is It Mission Impossible?—Bob Bohanske This workshop provides a no nonsense discussion about how to get started using feedback in your agency. Based on his experience implementing outcome management at the largest public behavioral health agency in Arizona, Bob addresses the nuts and bolts of getting started. Moving from illness toward recovery means that counseling professionals must be both responsible and responsive to their customer base and directly involve clients in decision making. This keynote calls for recovery-focused services based on the heart and soul of change—services that recognize clients as the primary movers of change, that require the unique tailoring of intervention to their preferences, and that call for relationships that are collaborative and respectful. 10:30-12:00: Becoming Better at What We Do: Five Steps—Barry Duncan Whether you’re a novice or expert practitioner, becoming better at what you do requires you to step up to the plate with two things: attaining systematic client feedback and taking your development as a helper to heart. This keynote integrates these two critical aspects and strives to help you re-remember why you became a counselor in the first place. Barry will present a pragmatic, five-step method for accelerating your development as a helper, invigorating your work, expanding your theoretical breadth, and dramatically improving your outcomes. How to Use Consumer Feedback to Improve Services for Young People and Caregivers in Schools, Homes, and Communities—John Murphy and Jacqueline Sparks “Shouldn't I be telling you what I think?,” a direct quote from a 10-year-old child, captures the invalidating experience of being excluded from one’s own treatment. This session provides hands-on methods and tools for using consumer feedback to deliver respectful and responsive services to young people and their caregivers. Social Justice The Flight of the Kiwi—Robyn Pope and Andrea McKenzie This workshop details the inspiring social justice journey of not only one agency but also of an entire country. The Treaty of Waitangi—the founding document between first nations people (Maori) of Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Crown provides the framework for a true partnership between cultures. Special Topics Criminal Justice: “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate. Some you just can’t reach!”—George Braucht Perhaps today’s foremost “change” challenge is helping others sustain long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug abuse and criminal behaviors. This session applies the ideas and practices of this conference to folks that many people, even professionals, tend to write off as incorrigible and unreachable. Peer Support and the Journey of Recovery—Lori Ashcraft and Bob Bohanske This workshop presents guidelines for successfully integrating peers into your workforce. Topics discussed include peer training and preparation, worksite preparations for a smooth integration of peers, performance improvement approaches, and evaluation, including what was previously missing in action, client based outcome feedback. Children, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Heart and Soul of Change—Sami Timimi The story of antidepressants and children symbolizes the relationship between medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, a tale of manipulation, deception, and potentially harmful practices. This workshop will outline the evidence for all psychiatric drugs for youth—highlighting what clients and relationship bring to the table. Consumer Driven Outcomes Implementation Supervision for a Change—in Clients and Counselors—Barry Duncan and Jonathan Hunt-Glassman This workshop presents a four stage process of supervision that ensures counselors are providing the best tailored clinical services possible while simultaneously attending to supervisee’s professional growth. MyOutcomes, a web based system of consumer driven outcomes management, is explored as a way to track individual and agency effectiveness, and as a framework to encourage counselor continued learning and development. 4:45-5:00: Break 5:00-5:30: Looking to the Future—The Heart and Soul of Change Project Team You have everything you need to make a difference. Keynote Speakers Makungu Akinyela, Ph.D., LMFT is the Clinical Director of the Family Center of South Dekalb, a private practice therapy center in Decatur, Georgia. He is also an Associate Professor teaching family and community development in the Department of African American Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Dr. Akinyela has developed and published journal articles, book chapters and monographs on Testimony Therapy, a discursive therapy grounded in the culture of the African American community. He has presented seminars, workshops and keynotes throughout the U.S.A. and abroad on Testimony ideas and social justice. Lori Ashcraft, Ph.D., CPRP is the Executive Director of Recovery Opportunities Center based in Phoe- nix, Arizona with Peer Support training, consulting and system development operating in 30 states and three countries. Dr. Ashcraft recently served as a professor for the University of Arizona teaching psycho-social rehabilitation and managing one of eight SAMHSA funded employment demonstration programs. Her latest book, Offering Wellness, provides insight to the “whole person” wellness and Recovery approach. Lori has had a strong interest in the therapeutic effects of self-determination, choice, and personal freedom. Barry L. Duncan, Psy.D., a therapist, trainer, and researcher with over 17,000 hours of clinical experience, is director of the Heart and Soul of Change Project. Barry has over one hundred publi- cations, including fifteen books. His latest: The Heroic Client ; Brief Intervention for School Problems; The Heart and Soul of Change; and On Becoming A Better Therapist. He is the co- developer of the Outcome and Session Rating Scales, measures designed to give consumers the voice they deserve and enable more effective care tailored to client preferences. Michael Lambert, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology and Susa Young Gates University Professor at Brig- ham Young University. He is the current editor of the 5th Edition of Bergin & Garfield’s Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change and the author of Prevention of Treatment Failure: The Use of Measuring, Monitoring, & Feedback in Clinical Practice. He has been in private practice for the last 35 years and teaches graduate courses in psychotherapy, supervision, and clinical research methods. Jacqueline A. Sparks, Ph.D. is an associate professor of family therapy in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island and Project Leader of the Heart and Soul of Change Project. She is author or co-author numerous articles and chapters as well as two books: Heroic Client and Heroic Clients, Heroic Agencies: Partners for Change (both with H&S presenter Barry Duncan). She is co-founder of the Heroicagencies Listserv, an international discussion forum for client-directed, outcome-informed implementation.

Workshop Presenters Morten Anker, Ph.D. Cand., is a therapist and researcher at the Family Counselling Office in Vestfold. Morten is the principle investigator of the largest study ever conducted about outcome feedback with couples, a study that changed the way a country delivers services. He is a Certified Trainer of CDOI and regularly conducts workshops across Norway. George Braucht, M.S., LPC is a Certified CDOI Trainer with three decades of experience delivering substance abuse, mental health, and crisis services; teaching college psychology, counseling and criminal justice courses; and conducting program evaluation, research, professional development, and system consultations. Robert T. Bohanske, Ph.D. is the Chief of Clinical Services and Clinical Training at South- west Behavioral Health Services in Phoenix, Arizona and Project Leader of the HSCP. He holds adjunct faculty positions at Arizona State, Argosy, and Ottawa University, and consults with the Arizona Department of Health Services. David Claud, MS is the COO for the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County, Florida. He conducted the first pilot of CDOI practices that examined efficiency variables and has successfully integrated CDOI concepts in grants and proposals for funding. In 2007 his agency was awarded a $1.2 million contract from the state of Florida to design and implement a demonstration project using CDOI practices with a “dual diagnosis” population. Jonathan Hunt-Glassman is the Special Assistant to the President of Danya Interna- tional, Inc. and the product manager for MyOutcomes, a consumer driven outcomes management system. He coordinates the efforts of researchers, content specialists, web site designers and developers to ensure that complex health information is translated into intuitive web-based applications. Jesse Owen, Ph.D. is assistant professor in the Education and Counseling Psychology De- partment, University of Louisville. He is the incoming associate editor for Psychotherapy, APA's Division 29 (Psychotherapy) flagship journal. His research interests include romantic relationships, couples therapy, and common factors in psychotherapy.

Andrea has been actively involved in the design and development of the community services division at Wesley Community Action. John Murphy, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Central Arkansas, has extensive experience implementing collaborative approaches with young people and school problems (www.drjohnmurphy.com).
