• SUPERNOVA
• An empty soda can is held in equilibrium by the pressure of the air inside the can directed outwards and the pressure of the air outside the can directed inwards.
• Place about 2 tablespoons of water inside the empty can. GOGGLES!
• Heat the can on the burner until the water starts to boil.
• Heating the water in the can causes the water to turn to steam.
• WHAT DOES THE STEAM PUSH OUT OF THE CAN?
• THE
• AIR!
• Now the can is held in equilibrium by the pressure of the steam pushing outwards and the pressure of the air outside the can pushing inwards.
• When the steam is really coming out of your can, you will quickly pick it up with the beaker tongs and invert it into the cold water in the aquarium.
• When the steam in the can is cooled by the cold water, it will INSTANTLY do what ?
• CONDENSE!
• Where is there NO PRESSURE now?
• Inside the can!
• There is no air in there either…just some condensation.
• Where IS there PRESSURE now?
• Outside the can!
• Predict what will happen to the can.
• How is this similar to a supernova?
• HINT: The supergiant runs out of _______ so there is no “pushing out.”
