What Is Vibration Exercise
If you have never heard of vibration exercise, you are probably not alone. Also known as ? whole body
vibration? or WBV, it has been researched for more than 100 years. Although this form of exercise has been
popular in other countries for decades, it has only recently caught on in the United States, as more and more
people look for easier and faster ways to exercise. The list of benefits is too long to list in full, but the main
benefits include increased flexibility, increased physical endurance and strength, increased muscle mass,
reduction in stress hormones, reduction in joint and muscle pain, accelerated weight loss, and an improved
sense of well-being.
s were first developed by a Swedish doctor named Gustrav Zander in 1857. He built several vibration
machines that were exhibited at two Worlds Fairs. He subsequently used his machines in Zander Institutes
which were similar to today?s health club or gym. Over time, these centers became very popular in the
Netherlands, and became popular world-wide as well. In the 1890s, an American inventor named Dr. John
Harvey Kellogg developed his own vibration machine. This was a chair design which shook clients violently
and was touted to cure back pain, constipation, and headaches. He later developed a standing platform.
It was not until the 1960s that the beginning of WBV as we know it today was invented. Developed in East
Germany, these machines used a unique form of vibration called rhythmic neuromuscular stimulation. Later,
Russian scientists learned of these techniques and continued to improve on the initial designs. The Russians
used WBV extensively on cosmonauts after returning to earth from long space missions. They found that
muscle atrophy and weakness resulting from long stays in weightlessness could be quickly reversed by using
WBV.
Over the years, the Russians conducted more research on WBV and were amazed at how muscle mass could
be improved by just using WBV regularly. Additionally, the s speeded recover during physical rehabilitation
and to prevented injury to athletes. WBV was used by Russian athletes during the Olympic Games in the
1960s. After the fall of Communism, the knowledge that the Russians had amassed since the 1960s became
readily available to their western and eastern counterparts. The technology continued to be studied and
improved upon by other researcher and scientists.
WBV quickly flourished in Asian and European countries, but has only recently been discovered in the United
States. At first, only the very wealthy could afford WBV machines, but with improved technology and
increasing interest by the general public, costs have steadily come down. There are some very good
machines available for home exercise use costing only a few hundred or thousands of dollars, depending on
the features you want.
In addition to the myriad of proven health benefits, is very easy to perform. Even elderly people have little
difficulty using WBV as a regular form of exercise. It is low-impact and takes only a few minutes to complete
one session, often under 30 minutes. You can be static or dynamic on the platform. There are several
configurations of MBV available to consumers. Most are standing models; some have handle bars, some do
not. Some offer one kind of vibration and others offer 2 or more types of vibration. There are machines that
also come with pre-programmed exercise programs. The model you select should be based on the goals you
have and your physical condition when starting.
Always consult with a physician before starting a WBV program, as you would with any type of exercise. If
you want to exercise, but just can?t spend the time in a gym every day, or hate regular exercise, you might
like vibration exercise. It provides many of the same benefits with less effort.
