      Policy Based Management
Policy-Based Management is a system for managing one or more instances of SQL Server 2008 and above.
Policy Management – Allows administrators to create policies
Explicit Management – Explicitly check if a server instance complies with a policy or explicitly make a server instance comply with a policy.
      Evaluation Modes
      On Demand
      On Change: Prevent
      On Change: Log only
      On Schedule

      System Health Session
The session collects information that includes the following:
Errors that have a severity greater than or equal to 20.
      Information about memory related errors.
A record of any non-yielding scheduler problems
      Any deadlocks that are detected.
Any waits greater than 15 seconds.
Lock waits greater than 30 seconds.
Information about sessions that have waited for a long time for preemptive waits.

      System Health Session
The system_health session is an Extended Events session that is included by default with SQL Server (2008 and above).
      Starts on SQL service startup.
No noticeable performance effects due to this session.
The session collects data that can be used to troubleshoot SQL Server performance issues in case you don’t have any data collection/monitoring tool collecting data.
The script to create the session is available in the u_tables.sql script under:
      C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLx.<instanceid>MSSQLInstall

      Management Data Warehouse
Management Data Warehouse was introduced in SQL Server 2008
Provides an out-of-the-box-method to collect Performance Monitor data along with SQL Server DMV output from a SQL Server instance at periodic intervals
Data collected is stored in a database which can be queried for trend analysis or base-lining or post-mortem analysis.

      Management Data Warehouse
      Three default collection sets
      Server Activity
      Query Statistics
      Disk Usage
Custom collection sets can be defined by the user

      Dedicated Administrator Connection
SQL Server provides a special diagnostic connection for administrators when standard connections to the server are not possible.
Only members of the SQL Server sysadmin role can connect using the DAC.
Use ADMIN:<server name> to connect using Management Studio or sqlcmd –S<server name> -A –E to connect using sqlcmd.

      Summary
      Policy based management
Can be used to enforce business constraints and rules on server instances.
Provides a one stop shop for monitoring compliances for all the policies that you have setup.
      System Health Session
Helps provide valuable information in case you were not collecting diagnostic information when the issue was occurring
      Management Data Warehouse
Provides you a repository for performing post mortem analysis for SQL performance issues
      Customizable as per your needs
      Dedicated Administrator Connection
Provides means to access the SQL instance when you have run out of worker threads or the instance is facing a resource crunch
