Creating a Notecard Giver in Second Life

 1. 1. Creating a Notecard Giver ELVEN Institute’s ‘Presenting in Second Life’ Workshop Avigail Lindman [email_address] The ELVEN Institute http://elveninstitute.org/
 2. 2.

Creating a New Note

Open your Inventory and click Create

Choose New Note

Rename the note in your inventory

Add a description to your note

Enter in your text

Click Save

This note is designed to automatically recognize notes and landmarks, so it does not matter what you name your note or landmark. Just be sure to delete the old note and landmark!

 3. 3.

Rezzing the Notecard Giver

Rezzing is the process by which an object is pulled from your inventory and dropped onto the ground.

Before rezzing an object, be sure you are in an area that allows rezzing. A good place to rez objects is a sandbox such as the one at Harbingers Heaven.

Sandboxes allow for building and rezzing of objects, but objects are only allowed for a set amount of time. Each sandbox has its own time limit. Items not removed within the time limit will be returned to you.

 4. 4.

Editing the Notecard Giver’s Shape and Position

A notecard can come in any size and shape. On the Object tab you can adjust the size and position of the notecard. This can also be done using the position arrows, rotating the shape, or by stretching the shape.

 5. 5.

Adding Content to the Notecard Giver

The content of a notecard giver can include many things like a note, landmark, image, or object. This notecard giver is designed to give out notes and landmarks.

To add a note or landmark you first choose the Content tab on the Build menu. Next, locate the desired item in your inventory. Finally, drag the item from your inventory to the content tab. This is repeated for each item you wish to include.

 6. 6.

Selecting a Texture

A notecard giver can display any type of texture you wish. These textures, or images, can be created using PowerPoint or imaging software so that they resemble a poster providing basic information.

Sample texture
 7. 7.

Adjusting the Texture

Textures are added by clicking the Texture tab on the Build box. To change the texture click the default texture, plywood. A box will appear from which you can select a texture.

Once the texture is chosen, you may need to make some basic adjustments. You will probably need to check the Repeats per Face. These should be set to Horizontal 1 and Vertical 1 if you are using a poster style texture like that in the example.

 8. 8.

Bonus Tip - Editing the Script

When someone clicks the notecard they will see a 'Thank you' response in their chat. You can change this text to meet your needs. *Caution-Make a copy of the script first in case you make any mistakes! Do so by dragging it from the contents tab to your inventory.

Rez the notecard (pull it from your inventory onto the ground)

Right-click it and choose Edit

Click the Content tab of the Edit box

Double-click the Giver Script

Locate the line

llSay(0, " Thank you "+llDetectedName(0)+" ! We look forward to seeing you! ");

Change the text between the first and/or second set of quotation marks

 9. 9. General Notecard Giver Info

The notecard giver distributed as part of the ELVEN workshop has full permissions. You may copy, modify and transfer the notecard giver to suit your needs.

If you encounter any issues, please IM me (Avigail Lindman ) for assistance.
