  1. 1. Who is winning “media war” on the issue of Via Baltica? An analysis of the English language media in Anglophone countries Presented by Bajinder Pal Singh, GEM (Erasmus Mundus) June 2007
  2. 2. In the era of 2 minute sound bytes and instant journalism Spatial context: Five continents  Americas:  US          Globe and Mail Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Canadian press Africa:  Zimbabwe        Europe: UK    Fox News Australian Broadcasting Corporation The Australian Sky News Asia: India  Guardian BBC The Post Australia   The Herald Zambia  Canada   Washington Post New York Times Fox News CNN NBC Voice of America  Times of India Hindustan Times The Indian Express
  3. 3. Conclusion (1): In Europe, the issue is hot  In Europe: UK has seen regular coverage.  The temporal dimension is interesting: Instead of EU, Poland is being blamed
  4. 4. Conclusion (2): Failure of environmentalists in rest of world     Environmental groups have been unsuccessful in turning Via Baltica into international event In Africa, Asia and Australia – the issue has been ignored. In Americas, there are few news items on Via Baltica, and most are drawn from secondary sources. Straight news with no comments. No mention in Canada. Polish radio (Polskie Radio) has been reasonably successful in delivering governmental viewpoint.
