  • 3.  The set of instructions that operates various parts of the hardware is called as software It is also called as computer program The hardware needs software for execution

  • 8. 1) Operating system   Control overall operation of a computer  Interacts directly with a computer  All softwares interact with the computer through the operating system  Control the internal functions of a computer  Maintain files on the disk drive  Manages the screen  Directs the processor to do work  Examples : windows, Mac OS, LINUX, UNIX, DOS etc
  • 9. 2) Device drivers   Interact directly with hardware  Facilitates communication between the computer and its devices  Takes instruction from computer and converts them into the device language form  Examples : VGA driver etc
  • 10. 3) Utilities   Perform system management and maintenance  Performs a particular function related to computer system managenent  Examples : antivirus software etc
  • 11. 4) Language translators   Used to develop or maintain programs  Translate the user language to machine language  Examples : compiler, interpreter
  • 12. Application software   Programs that generally interact with the user to perform work that is useful to the user  Generally talk to the hardware through the assistance of a system software  Interact directly with the user for the performance of a certain type of work
