  • 2. Social Networks Were Discouraged • When social networking sites first emerged, most were blocked or discouraged from usage at work – Many companies made policies against their use

Now Accepted • Social sites are not frowned upon in as many workplaces because: – Social networking sites are so widespread – Many employees are now allowed to develop and sustain their personal brand and professional network on social media • However, some industry sectors still discourage them, including the government
  • 4. Why Companies Block Social Sites • When interacting with members of GovLoop, we found why their agencies block social networks: 1. Not enough bandwidth to handle social media logs 2. Security 3. Usage for non-work activities 4. Loss of productivity
  • 5. Why They Shouldn’t Block • While these concerns are legitimate, the costs of addressing them often outweigh the benefits Here is why employees should be able to have access to social networks: 1. Professional networking 2. Morale 3. Knowledge sharing 4. Bottom-up news aggregation
