Storage Devices And Media

 1. 1. STORAGE DEVICES AND MEDIA
2. 2. Optical backing storage media suchas CDs and DVDs

CDs tend to be used for large files (but smaller than 1Gb)which are too big for a floppy disc to hold such as music and general animation.
 3. 3. DVDs are used to hold very large files

(several Gb) such as movie films.

Both CDs and DVDs are portable i.e. they can be transported from one computer to another.
 4. 4. Both can be used to store computer data.

CD ROM/ DVD ROM

Applications which require the prevention of deletion of data, accidental or otherwise.
 5. 5. CDs used by software companies for

distributing software programs and data; by Music companies for distributing music albums and by book publishers for distributing encyclopedias, reference books etc.

DVDs used

by film distributors.
6. 6. CD R / DVD R

Applications which require a single ‘burning’ of data, e.g. CDs– recording of music downloads from the Internet, recording of music from MP3 format, recording of data for archiving or backup purposes.
 7. 7. DVDs- recording of film movies and television programs.

CD RW/DVD RW

Advantage

Applications which require the updating of information and ability to record over old data.

Disadvantage

Not suitable for music recording but is very useful for keeping generations of files.
8. 8. DVD RAM

Housed in a cartridge. Used in video recorders, camcorders and computer memory.

HD DVD

Used in video recorders and computer memory as well as games consoles – main rival to blu-ray.

Advantages

Necessary to support the way your computer works
 9. 9. Large storage capacity
 10. 10. Stores and retrieves data much faster than a floppy disk or CD/DVD
 11. 11. Stored items are not lost when you switch off the computer
 12. 12. Cheap on a cost per megabyte compared to other storage devices

Disadvantages

Far slower to access data than ROM or RAM chips
 13. 13. Hard disks can crash which stop the computer from working
 14. 14. Regular crashes can damage the surface of the disk, leading to loss of data in that sector
 15. 15. The disk is fixed inside the computer and cannot easily be transferred to another computer.

BLU-RAY

Used in video recorders and computer memory as well as games consoles. Largest storage capacity of optical media.

Solid state backing storage
Advantage.

Smallest form of memory, used as removable storage.

More robust than other forms of storage.
Disadvantage.

More expensive than other forms but can be easily written to and updated.

Memory sticks/Pen drives

Can store up to many Gb. Used to transport files and backup data from computer to computer.

Flash Memory cards
Advantages

Used in digital cameras, palmtops, mobile phones, MP3 players
 16. 16. They are more compact and portable than floppy disks or CDs/DVDs.
 17. 17. They hold more data than a floppy disk and nowadays often more than a CD.
 18. 18. They are more reliable than a floppy disk because they have no moving parts
 19. 19. They are being developed with fashionable looking outer casings and are almost becoming a 'fashion accessory' much in the way of a mobile phone.

Disadvantages

At the moment, the cost per megabyte of storage is more expensive than floppy disks, CDs or DVDs.
 20. 20. They can be easily lost
 21. 21. The metal part which is inserted into the USB port can be snapped off if they are handled roughly.
