Mitosis is the process by which a cell divides into two identical daughter cells. It has five main steps: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and cytokinesis. During prophase, the chromatin condenses into chromosomes. Then during prometaphase and metaphase, the nuclear envelope breaks down and spindle fibers form to align the chromosomes in the center of the cell. In anaphase, the chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell. Finally, in cytokinesis, the cell cytoplasm divides forming two identical daughter cells each with the same number of chromosomes as the original parent cell.
