2. The first difference between the two news bulletins are the jingles length, our jingle is 6 -8
seconds long whereas the OCR jingle is 11 seconds long; which I think is a little too long and a
waste of time for the news bulletin. Both of them are very well edited and are nicely faded in and
out. Both of them state the stations identity, however the OCR bulletin does not introduce the
speaker whereas ours does. Another difference is that they have a different person speaking
during the jingle and the news bulletin, ours has the same person throughout. The OCR jingle
sounds more technical on the other hand ours is just a beat in the background. At the start of our
broadcast the presenter stars by saying “hello”, OCR does not do this they start of by saying “ you
are listening to ..”. Both news bulletins end in a similar way, OCR ends their bulletin by “that’s
the latest I’m Rachel Joe”; oppositely our news bulletin ends by “I’ve been Ellis Helire Catherall you
have been listening to Oldham community news more in an hour”. The main difference is that our
bulletin finishes of by stating the stations identity and the presenters name whereas OCR’s
doesn't. For the opening and closure of the news bulletin I have learned a lot, I learnt that the
news bulletin has to start off by a jingle which is both relatable and sounds good, it took time to
find the right jingle, which was copyright free as well. I learnt that you had to state the stations
identity to the listeners so they are aware of what radio station they are listening to. If you we're
broadcasting the news you had to speak in a formal tone of voice however this changes if you
we’re just talking casually on a talk show or when interviewing a comedian, this will then change
to an informal tone of voice.
3.
Before writing the script we needed to learn how to write a
professional radio bulletin script. We learnt construction
techniques such as; the 5W’s and an H, the 3c’s, the inverted
triangle and kiss and tell (keep it short, simple and straight to
the point). The OCR news bulletin uses all of these because
these are the constructions to make a script and we have
similarly used these to make our script. These methods allow
the listeners to understand the main features of the stories.
The way OCR has arranged the 5w's is different to ours this
gives it a different flow to the bulletin.
4.
The presenter for our news bulletin is Ellis. He appeals to
point out the target audience who are listening to the radio
station, which are the 12-19 years old who are attending high
school and college. Ellis is also from Oldham which gives him
an Oldham accent he also has a young/teen voice which may
add a feel to the whole show. The OCR news presenter sounds
like a professional presenter and pronounces words fluently.
She speaks in the same tone of voice for the whole duration of
the show unlike Ellis who sometimes changes his tone of
voice. We learnt and made sure that Ellis performs the 3 word
per second rule correctly like the OCR news present does.
5.
Our top story was about David Cameron suggesting to cut
benefits for the under 25's. I picked this story because many
listeners will be effected by this news story. The value for this
news story is negative, this is because this change will affect
many potential students in the future. Similarly both stories
have used the 5w's to structure their story. The OCR's top
story is about Nelson Mandela coming out of the hospital.
Their story has been chosen differently and follows the values
of continuity and personality. The news story also has been
continued from the previous news story which was about how
he went into hospital.
6.
For our news bulletin we have included 3 news stories, which inform the
audience of a variety of news stories ranging from hard news stories to
sports news stories. The length of our news bulletin is longer than
OCR's, ours is 5 minutes and 6 seconds meaning we have more time to
fill, we also include more interviews and voxpops as well as more
information than OCR’s bulletin which is only 2 minutes and 10 seconds
long. This has no voxpops and no or interviews, just news stories. The
OCR news bulletin includes 6 stories which is double the amount of ours
and is performed in less than half our time. The OCR news bulletin just
informs the listeners about the basics of the news on the other hand
ours goes into more detail about each individual news story. Another
reason it is shorter than ours is because, in between the news stories
OCR doesn't have a sound bed to break up the news stories; whereas
ours does.
7.
In our news bulletin we have included three different news
stories, a hard, a soft and a sports news story. I did not pick
an “of the wall” story because, the news bulletins I listened to
did not include an of the wall story, they included a sport
story instead. In the OCR news bulletin they similarly include a
soft, a hard and a sports news story. They also have the same
layout as ours by, starting off with the hard news story and
then the other two following it.
8.
Content, OCR’s news bulletin includes two specialist reporter
interviews for the main news stories. An example of the
specialist reporter interview is the reporter interviewing David
Cameron. On the other hand our news bulletin contains a
variety of; outside broadcasts, interviews as well as the
voxpops due to the fact we had more time to fill the time gap
which was 5 minutes. This resulted in us getting different
people’s opinions.
9.
We have included a variety of different techniques to produce
this bulletin, the main one is the editing. I was the editor and
tried my best to achieve a professional outcome. I did this by
smoothing in and out the sound bed when needed. We also
used specialist equipment to reduce the sound in the
background for the interviews, an example of the equipment
is a squashy. Correspondingly the OCR bulletin has also been
very well edited and has a sound bed in the background. The
sound levels that were recorded independently for the
broadcasts were edited well and both were really smooth and
neither of them cut of too fast.
