    Web application accessed via the browser.
    Alternative to file servers for storing and accessing documents.
    Tool that lets people make their own web sites for collaboration (Key Feature).
    SharePoint 2010 is a first class document management system ( no need to augment the product with 3rd party tools like SharePoint 2007).
    Web Content Management system for public facing web sites.
    A search engine.
  • 7. SharePoint as a Platform
    SharePoint 2010 is a first class development platform.
    Everything is based on templates and developers can create their own ones:
    Web Sites (Collaboration, Meeting Workspace, News, …)
    Lists & Libraries
    Workflows
    Web Parts (In other words :Widgets or Gadgets)
    Those templates are Most probably XML + .NET Assemblies + ASP.NET components
    SharePoint as a platform has components to provision new instances from the installed templates on demand.
    SharePoint as a platform has background services to do work behind the scenes.
    Visual Studio 2010 can be used to create special purpose templates.
    SharePoint Designer 2010 can be used to manage and customize instances based on those templates.

    A collection of pre-built templates and background services.
    Some are free and others are not.
    Some collections of features are sold as standalone products that are built on SharePoint the platform like:
    Search Server
    Forms Server
    Team Foundation Server

    Fast Search
    SQL Server Reporting Services
