  • 1. “We all want to escape occasionally. But science fiction is often veryfar from escapism, in fact science fiction is escape into reality. Its afiction which does concern itself with real issues: the origin of man;our future. In fact I cant think of any form of literature which is moreconcerned with real issues, reality." - Arthur C Clarke

  • 3. BIOPUNK(A word combining "biotechnology" and "punk") The ʻbiopunk movementʼ is a small intellectual and cultural movement which comprises of a number of scientists, artists and cultural critics who create public awareness of how human genomics information gets used and misused. Biopunk science fiction is a sub-genre of cyberpunk fiction that explores the struggles of individuals or groups, often the product of human experimentation, against a backdrop of totalitarian governments which misuse biotechnologies as means of social control or, profiteering. POP CULTURE: Jurassic Park | The Fly | Gattaca Transgenic artist Eduardo Kac procured a green-fluorescent rabbit, Alba ; a rabbit implanted with a green fluorescent protein gene from a type of jellyfish in order FOR THE RABBIT TO FLUORESCE GREEN UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT.
  • 4. BIOPUNKSYNTHETIC BIOLOGY in Engineering; it helps design and build bio-systems that process information, manipulate chemicals, translate materials, produce energy, provide food, maintain and enhance human health and our environment. in Chemistry; it is the creation of useful new biochemicals in order to study the origins of life. Synthetic Biology has a heavy emphasis on developing foundational technologies that make engineering of biology easier and reliable. Christopher Voigt, an American synthetic biologist, molecular biophysicist, and engineer redesigned Type III secretion system to secrete spider silk proteins which is a strong elastic biomaterial, instead of its own infectious proteins.
  • 5. SYNTHETIC BIOLOGYLIBERAL EUGENICS It is an ideology which advocates the use of reproductive and genetic technologies where the choice of the goals of enhancing human characteristics and capacities is left to the INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES of consumers, rather than the collectivist priorities of a government authority. Eugenics is often broken into the categories; positive (encouraging reproduction in the designated "fit") and, negative (discouraging reproduction in the designated "unfit"). The negative programs were contained in much of the rhetoric of Nazi eugenic policies of racial hygiene and genocide. GATTACA, a film which incorporates the possibility of a society driven by liberal eugenics. Children of higher classes are selected through PRE-IMPLANTATION GENETIC DIAGNOSIS to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents.
  • 6. LIBERAL EUGENICSTHE FUTURE The world has; Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, Genetic Screening, wherein ʻsaviour siblingsʼ were created as a match. The world will have the implementation of the concept of infertile couples being able to produce clones to pass on their genes. According to British journalist Johann Hari, “we should be honest enough to call this attempt to improve the genetic lot of humanity by its name - liberal eugenics.Human life is being extended and enhanced in ways that spread joy and harm nobody.” Dolly (July 5, 1996 – February 14, 2003), was a female domestic sheep remarkable in being the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer.
  • 7. LIBERAL EUGENICSTHE FUTURE? THEN ARE WE ATTEMPTING TO BE, PERFECTLY PERFECT?
