Let us hear this conversation. MM-1 (Scene between a brother Vicky and a sister Pinky in their study room) Vicky: hey di .how strange it feels after leaving your university. I can’t put my mind off from those days. Pinky : yes it is actually very strange. You miss those small moments spent with your friends. We actually grow up but with a sense of free world. We experience the new things as compared to the present times where we have to become very responsible . Vicky: now is the time when we can’t even think of escaping from your duties, our responsibilities. Pinky: yes remembering past time sometimes brings smile and sometimes brings tears in our eyes. Vicky: di do you remember that first day of our college? That excitement , happiness, anxiety everything. Pinky : yes all those mixed feelings. Hey brother you said you have to give article for your college magazine. Vicky: yes di but I can’t decide the topic.
  • PES/ENG/X/123 Pinky : what topic are we discussing here? . Vicky: What? Pinky: Why don’t you write on’ First day in college.’ Vicky: Yes di it will be very interesting too. But di you know my language skills. I can’t write an essay Pinky Well don’t worry. I am going to guide you in that. Vicky: di so teach me everything about this.So that I can get good marks. Pinky: OK. See such type of writing is called NARRATIVE ESSAYS. There's nothing like reading a great narrative. Whether in novel or essay form, a narrative piece of writing transports readers into the time and space of the world portrayed by the writing. ANCHOR Students did you feel the emotions of that boy. This is called effective writing. SUPER What is narrative essay? TEXT with VO A narrative essay is a piece of writing that recreates an experience through time. There's nothing like writing a great narrative. Through reflecting upon an event, and through recreating the experience for other readers, writing a narrative essay can enable you to develop new, subtle, and rewarding perspectives. SUPER What are basic qualities of narrative essay? TEXT with VO Basic qualities of a narrative essay: ARE:- • A narrative essay can be based on one of your own experiences, either past or present, or it can be based on the experiences of someone else. • In addition to telling a story, a narrative essay also communicates a main idea or a lesson learned. Well students have you understood what is a narrative essay? Now what are the key ingredients for it?That is what we are going to read now. Let us get back to our conversation. MM-2
  • PES/ENG/X/123 (Show the brother and sister again.) Pinky: You have to keep in mind some simple things to write a good essay. Vicky : What are they? PInky : As you know, in narrative essay we talk about some experience. So first think about that experience. SUPER First steps for writing a Narrative essay: TEXT with VO. • Identify the experience that you want to write about. • Think about why the experience is significant. • Spend a good deal of time drafting your recollections about the details of the experience. • Create an outline of the basic parts of your narrative. Brother : so basically rough points are to be made. ANCHOR So students, basically you have to jot down the points and compose and organize them. MM-3 (Show Vicky and Pinky again.) Pinky: now you have to see what all will you write? Ok you tell me . Vicky : see di, I can talk about my feelings , emotions , anything strange if happened etc. Pinky : So that means everything is vague and unclear. Well listen to these points very carefully. TEXT with VO . Writing about the experience: • Using your outline, describe each part of your narrative. • Rather than telling your readers what happened, use vivid details and descriptions to actually recreate the experience for your readers. • Think like your readers. Try to remember that the information you present is the only information your readers have about the experiences. • Always keep in mind that all of the small and seemingly unimportant details known to you are not necessarily known to your readers. Vicky : ok so I could write something like this.
  • PES/ENG/X/123 Do you remember your first day in the university? Well, I remember my first day I was waiting all the summer to enter at the university. I felt excited and at the same time I was very nervous because it was my first day in the university and I didn't know any person. My first day in the university was good. Pinky: Yes very good. ANCHOR Well students did you understand what all you have to keep in mind to write an essay, There are special tips to follow. VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN • It's often effective to begin your narrative with a paragraph that introduces the experience and communicates the significance. • Another effective technique is to begin the essay by jumping directly into the narrative and then ending the essay with a paragraph communicating the significance of the experience. This approach allows your readers to develop their own understanding of the experience • You might also consider introducing the experience in the first paragraph but delaying your expression of the significance of the experience until the end of the essay. ANCHOR Well depending upon the purpose of writing you can frame your beginning or end. If you're having trouble choosing an experience to write about, take a quick glance through these prompts. They might help you remember or identify a particularly interesting or significant experience to focus on. VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN A childhood event. Think of an experience when you learnt something for the first time, or when you realized how important someone was for you. Achieving a goal. Think about a particularly meaningful achievement in your life. This could be something as seemingly minor as achieving a good grade on a difficult assignment, or this could be something with more long-lasting effects, like getting the job you desired or getting into the best school to which you applied. A failure. Think about a time when you did not perform as well as you had wanted. Focusing on an experience like this can result in rewarding reflections about the positive emerging from the negative. A good or bad deed. Think about a time when you did or did not stand up for yourself or someone else in the face of adversity or challenge.
  • PES/ENG/X/123 A change in your life. Think about a time when something significant changed in your life. This could be anything from a move across town to a major change in a relationship to the birth or death of a loved one. A realization. Think about a time when you experienced a realization. This could be anything from understanding a complicated math equation to gaining a deeper understanding of a philosophical issue or life situation. ANCHOR Well students just by following by these simple things you can write real Good essay . MM-4 Pinky: Can you write something now? Vicky : Let me try. VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN I didn't know how to arrive to my classroom. I was lost and I had to ask one person about the building where I was going to take classes. This person was very nice and told me the right direction. I walked to the building, and when I arrived I saw some people and I felt strange. I approached one girl and I asked for the classroom and we discovered that we were in the same group and I felt less nervous. I introduced myself and she also did it, her name was Nisha. We came in the classroom and the time to start classes began. When we began our classes, all our classmates were quiet. Nobody talked. The teacher arrived early. She started the class and after that we introduced ourselves. Then I saw my other classmates and I looked at two girls. They were Geeta and Meena. I approached them and I talked with Geeta and Meena . I introduced myself, then they did the same and we began to know more about each other, like where we were from or what we did. After that, we spent the rest of the day together until we had to go home. I am always going to remember that day because I had the opportunity to meet more people and the most important thing was that I had met the best friends that I have ever had. Finally, I think that it is natural that on the first day we feel nervous, but the things always have a happy ending. That's why I say that my first day in the university was very good. MM-5 Show Vicky and Pinky again. Pinky: Hey Vicky,
  • PES/ENG/X/123 VERY GOOD JOB. NOW YOU PICK UP AND GIVE THIS ONE FOR YOUR COLLEGE MAGAZINE. ANCHOR Well students if you pay attention, narrative essay is nothing but expressing any of your experiences. Only. It is simple and easy to write too. Well let us see how will be our next type, easy or difficult.? SUPER Our next type of essay is Descriptive essay. ANCHOR NOW STUDENTS DOES THIS NAME GIVE YOU ANY HINT AS PER THE DEFINITION. Well let me help you. SUPER What is descriptive essay? ANCHOR More than many other types of essays, descriptive essays strive to create a deeply involved and vivid experience for the reader. Great descriptive essays achieve this affect not through facts and statistics but by using detailed observations and descriptions. SUPER But next crucial question is What do you want to describe? ANCHOR Well as you get started on your descriptive essay, it's important for you to identify exactly what you want to describe. Often, a descriptive essay will focus on portraying one of the following: SUPER TEXT with VO • a person • a place • a memory • an experience • an object Ultimately, whatever you can perceive or experience can be the focus of your descriptive writing. Students always remember there is a particular reason to write a descriptive essay. For Example:
  • PES/ENG/X/123 Imagine that you want to write a descriptive essay about your grandfather. You've chosen to write about your grandfather's physical appearance and the way that he interacts with people. However, rather than providing a general description of these aspects, you want to convey your admiration for his strength and kindness. This is your reason for writing the descriptive essay. To achieve this, you might focus one of your paragraphs on describing the roughness of his hands, roughness resulting from the labor of his work throughout his life, but you might also describe how he would hold your hands so gently with his rough hands when having a conversation with you or when taking a walk. ANCHOR Now children you must be wondering how you should write your description. Yes it is very crucial work because this will decide the content of your essay. Well If there's one thing you should remember as you write your descriptive essay, it's the famous saying: show don't tell. But what's the difference between showing and telling? O.K. consider these two simple examples: VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN • I grew tired after dinner. • As I leaned back and rested my head against the top of the chair, my eyelids began to feel heavy, and the edges of the empty plate in front of me blurred with the white tablecloth. ANCHOR The first sentence tells readers that you grew tired after dinner. The second sentence shows readers that you grew tired. The most effective descriptive essays are loaded with such showing because they enable readers to imagine or experience something for themselves. SUPER TEXT with VO As you write your descriptive essay, the best way to create a vivid experience for your readers is to focus on the five senses. MM-6- Give an animated picture of each sense example. • Sight Eg. The light blue screen, spreading across the horizon was dotted with spots of fluffy white cotton balls, the small birds crisscrossing like a threaded black necklace. It was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. I could never believe that the sky could present such a serene view.
  • PES/ENG/X/123 • Sound Eg. The cacophony of horns, the loud calling of the hawkers, the jarring noise of heavy trucks and buses, and the cling clang of rickshaw pullers and cycles makes Chandni Chawk a very noisy area, specially in the evening. • Smell Eg.The sweet fragrance of Jasmine flowers, the mystic fumes filled with the scent of numerous insence sticks mixed with the mouthwatering aroma of Tandoori Chicken and Roasted Paneer made us walk faster to the Wedding Venue. • Touch Eg. As I put my hand inside the earthen pot for a glass of water, I felt something slippery and cold, sliding over my hand.slimy and slithery. Was it a reptile? A chill ran through my spine, as I withdrew my hand instantly. • Taste Eg.The pungent aroma of ‘sarson’ made the dish more tangy in taste and I could savour the whole amount of the tangy and delicious fish curry. When you focus your descriptions on the senses, you provide vivid and specific details that show your readers rather than tell your readers what you are describing. SUPER So is there any fixed procedure to follow? ANCHOR There is no fixed procedure to follow as such but there are certain tips which needs to be kept in mind. SUPER Quick Tips for Writing Your Descriptive Essay Writing a descriptive essay can be a rich and rewarding experience, but it can also feel a bit complicated. It's helpful, therefore, to keep a quick checklist of the essential questions to keep in mind as you plan, draft, and revise your essay. ANCHOR First you need to do planning of your descriptive essay. Let us see how. VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN o What or who do you want to describe?
  • PES/ENG/X/123 o What is your reason for writing your description? o What are the particular qualities that you want to focus on? ANCHOR AFTER PLANNING NEXT STEP IS TO DRAFT YOUR ESSAY. How? LET US SEE. VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN o What sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures are important for developing your description? o Which details can you include to ensure that your readers gain a vivid impression imbued with your emotion or perspective? ANCHOR Well I hope children by now you all must have understood how we are supposed to write a descriptive essay? Let us see one example to understand all our points in a better way. EXAMPLE VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN MM-7- Let the essay be a walkthrough of an examination hall, as described in the essay. EXAMINATION HALL The door to my Examination Hall is nearly always closed. It's the place I go to write my papers and work in tranquility. Today, however, I'm inviting you in for a visit. Although the hall is not too small, I hope you find it cozy. A big cheerful window lets in the morning sunshine, which fills the room with its warmth and greets us with a bright ray of light. Birds chirp outside, telling you to enter ,happily. An old-fashioned doctor's desk with brass drawer handles is placed in front of the window, where sits our Invigilator, when tired of taking his vigilant rounds. Against the left wall are some book cases, sagging with the wise weight of cheap paperbacks and a few expensive gold-spined volumes pushed in between. A painted picture of Gandhiji hangs on the wall, looking at all of us. Won't you have a seat in the tattered old green armchair tucked in the other corner? I know you smell the freshly painted furniture. I renovated it specially for your visit. Use my favorite chair there in the
  • PES/ENG/X/123 corner though I do not get a chance to sit there for every examination.; it's the one with a cracked handle, but it is a lucky seat for me. Stay as long as you wish, but when you're ready to leave, be sure to close the door behind you. I like the peaceful security of this place, when I come to write my examination papers. ANCHOR Well students did you notice how beautifully the Examination Hall is described. Its small and intricate details are kept in mind and they are woven very beautifully to give pleasure to the students and readers. Well students, now I am making you see and hear one essay. After reading you have to answer few simple questions. VO WITH TEXT ON SCREEN A MARRIAGE PARTY,NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN. My own marriage night became a comedy of errors when I was getting ready for the great occasion, full of great dreams in my heart.Soon the groom was at our doorstep and hurriedly I picked up my heavy’ lehnga’ to peep out of the window. I expected it to be a night that dreams are made of; instead, I was provided with a less than perfect evening. I wanted to give Inder, my date and escort, a dazzling first impression by meeting him at the door in my beautiful Wedding dress. When Inder arrived, he was met at the door by my fathe instead of me, and he found my mother lying at my feet on the living room floor, sewing the hem in my ‘lehnga’. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, my mother announced that she was finished and that we were already late for the marriage venue at the Temple grounds.. I decided to relax and compose myself in the car, but instead of a comfortable coach, I found a cramped pumpkin awaiting me in the form of a Fiat. As I got inside the car, I realized that most of my dress was still outside. Quickly, I began piling layer after layer of fabric on my lap until it reached the ceiling and I could see nothing out of the car windows. Arriving at the Pandal in silence, my escort and I were quickly ushered into position behind the other representatives. As the procession started; I felt like Cinderella at the ball. While the announcer introduced the representatives and their escorts, I visualized myself walking gracefully up the ramp as the audience looked on. Before I knew it, the spotlight was on us. As we slowly made our way up the ramp, the announcer introduces us as Vikas and Vineeta. Hearing the names of someone else
  • PES/ENG/X/123 shocked both of us. Then it happened- as we turned, our feet became entangled in my heavy and long lehnga; with a hop, skip, and jump, we tripped down the ramp towards the stairs. Determined to climb the stairs gracefully, I started go up slowly. Upon reaching the top step, I realized I had also climbed up the inside of my dress and was now on my knees. My escort had to carefully back me down the steps until we could once again make our climb. As the evening came to an end, I realized that with all that had happened, only my friends knew the true identity of the two clowns in the procession. Everyone else thought it was Vikas and Vineeta. ANCHOR Is this essay is a narrative or a descriptive essay?
