The Act of Smoking
То, что вы видите, - это не трубка. That what you see is not a pipe.Imagine: two tender feetEnter your mouth in a slow movement,And you breathe in a tangy aroma of sex,Watching in front of you a beautiful headTrembling in the fumes of passion.And, giving in fully to love,You mentally move your fingerFrom feet along the legsReaching to the cherished curveFull of the finest tobacco,Which is what you adore -Bosom or ass -And finally, deciding to surrender to lust,You tightly squeeze the bosom (or ass?),Drawing in as deeply as you can stand, -As you can afford,As you can -The scent of the Belle Dame,Of a whore, or a choir girl, or a student,Of a music-hall dancer,Of Justine, Mary or Greta,And let the smoke out through your nostrils,Relishing how the tasteSinks deep into your stomach,And then, taking a woman out of your mouth,You gently slap her at the front or on the back,Shaking off the remains of love into an ash trayAnd putting the body away into a slip -Till next time.

I want to love you, but I know not, how;To call your name - but is there such a nameThat may become you? To the spheres above I now entrust the knowledge of the same. I barely hope and yet I almost fear,They will have found the word and then (alas!)I will gain power over you to bear - The power that no mortal ever has.

Harlequin
Плачет Пьеро, своих слез не стыдясь:В сердце тряпичном вспыхнула страсть.Но Коломбину увел Арлекин.Плачет Пьеро, как и прежде, один. И Коломбина, почувствовав грусть, Другу на белую бросилась грудь.Краски испестрили нежный сатин, И наш Пьеро стал теперь Арлекин. Что ты понурился, гордый мой шут? Или уж фарсы тебя не влекут? Ты – Арлекин, и Пьеро – Арлекин...Жаль, не хватает на вас Коломбин. 2006
Pierrot is crying, not ashamed of tears.His heart of cloth a burning passion bears.But Harlequin took Columbine away.Pierrot is crying, alone, all the same.Yet Columbine then suddenly felt sadAnd so embraced her lonely dear friend.The colours stained the white and gentle dress,And look - Pierrot is Harlequin, no less!My proud jester, why do you not smile?Have you been tired of jokes for a while?Like you, Pierrot is now a Harlequin,But there is still one Columbine to win.

Pygmalion

I am foreseeing still, And I am still unknown. It's hard enough for me To get to know myself. Is there a price to words, Or their value is indeed invented, When scales are used to measure their worth To give to someone as a gift or credit, To which the weights are always other words?Paroles, paroles... From underneath their face A subject lurks, occasional and silent, Escaping to the infinitive’s maze, Abandoning the predicate’s confinement, Confusing all superlatives in haste. Paroles, paroles... I also live the words But now, taking off my famous smile, I think: do you have really any worth, So usual, wise, eternal, versatile,Or are you always words, but mere words?

A Poem with No End
Читаю тебя, как читают любимую книгу: Опять и опять возвращаюсь к знакомым страницам; Расправлю закладки; сквозь мелких морщин паутинуУвижу твой том, как когда-то давно, гладколицым. Ты - мой самый длинный роман, что всегда недописан; Единственный автор, пред кем я - беспомощный критик; Название - тайна, а текст много раз переиздан, И в каждом находится место для новых событий. Мне хочется думать, что я наизусть тебя знаю. Я помню все знаки, слова, повороты сюжета. Но вдруг ты меняешься; снова тебя открываюИ в упоенье читаю всю ночь до рассвета. I read you as I read my favourite book:Oft I return to the familiar pages;I smooth the creases; through the shade of agesI always recognise your youthful look.You are the only work that never ends;You as an author leave my critic's smitten;Your name's a secret; and the text's rewrittenSo many times, and yet as new it stands.I would that I have now learnt and knownAll of your signs, and words, and twists of story, -But memory fails me, and to your gloryI hungrily devour you till dawn.Those readers are the happiest of allWho find the new delight in known chapters.And I will read this novel thereafter,However many more there are, both new and old.I read you as I read my favourite book.
