UNCONDITIONAL LOVEA story is told about a soldier who was finally cominghome after having fought in Vietnam. He called hisparents from San Francisco.
"Mom andDad, Imcominghome, butIve a favorto ask. Ihave afriend Idlike to bringhome withme"
"Sure," they replied, "wed love to meet him." "Theressomething you should know the son continued, "he washurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a landmind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go,and I want him to come live with us."
• "Im sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we canhelp him find somewhere to live."
"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us." "Son,"said the father, "you dont know what youre asking.Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden onus. We have our own lives to live, and we cant letsomething like this interfere with our lives. I think youshould just come home and forget about this guy. Hellfind a way to live on his own."
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. Afew days later, however, they received acall from the San Francisco police.
Their son had died after falling froma building, they were told. The policebelieved it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to SanFrancisco and were taken to the citymorgue to identify the body of theirson. They recognized him, but to theirhorror they also discovered somethingthey didnt know, their son had onlyone arm and one leg.
• The parents in thisstory are like many ofus. We find it easy tolove those who aregood-looking or fun tohave around, but wedont like people whoinconvenience us ormake us feeluncomfortable.
We would rather stay away frompeople who arent as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.
Thankfully, theres someone who wonttreat us that way. Someone who loves uswith an unconditional love that welcomesus into the forever family, regardless ofhow messed up we are.Tonight, before you tuck yourself in forthe night, say a little prayer that Godwill give you the strength you need toaccept people as they are, and to helpus all be more understanding of thosewho are different from us!!!
