    British Culture - Hugo - Presentation Transcript

    1. The English People Who are the English? Who are the British? Are they the same?. .
    2. First, this is an archipelago and one Isle is Great Britain. It’s the eighth –largest island in the world. There are British, English, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish and other groups. They have the same administration and they are called the United Kingdom. It’s surrounded by over 1000 smaller islands and islets.
    3. This main island is called England too and it has 9 administrative regions.
    4. The second island is Ireland (independent country), it is a part of the British Isles but a fifth belongs to United Kingdom. The Irish don’ t like to be called British isles because they are confused with the English. Another name is Isles of North Atlantic.
    5. First Conclusion: The inhabitants of the archipelago Britain are Britons (the geographic name) and the English are inhabitants of England (country). Other questions, Is United Kingdom the same as England? NO. United Kingdom is
    6. Now we know who they are. What is their character like?
    7. First, the character of English people is conservative and on the other hand it is extroverted. The pub is as the living room for them, this is a different concept with other parts of the world.
    8. The pubs represent pleasure with control, they don’t open all night. The Pub is open in the morning and then it’s open in the night until 10 P. M., that’s very early.
    9. The English humor is different, the English humor is word oriented while the Americans English is action oriented. The Americans don’ t like the English humor.
    10. The English patience is represented in the ritual of tea drinking. It’s a special form to prepare tea, it’s not quick. All the country stops their activities for this ceremony.
    11. The other side of the English character is the bizarre, the audacious and the innovative. For example in the musician, The Beatles and Mick Jaegger began the revolution of costumes in western culture.
    12. The English people are stereotyped as inordinately proper, prudish and stiff and as having bad teeth. The English men dislike dancing, unless they are drinking.
