PMI Safety
1. SAFETY
Safety is of the utmost importance to PMI and is our first priority.
There will always be inherit risks involved in going to a developing
nation but we will take the necessary steps to minimize any risk to
team members’ safety. When traveling abroad and working in any
unfamiliar country, it is critical that each team member assist PMI in
maintaining the highest standards of safety for themselves and as
well as for every team member. Always be aware of your safety
and do not put yourself in dangerous positions. Use common
sense at all times. We want you to have the time of your life but
please remember SAFETY FIRST in all situations.
2. CLINICAL SAFETY
• Safety First
• Contact and Respiratory
Precautions
• Comply with OSHA Guidelines
(non-medical volunteers will not
perform medical procedures)
• Follow Same Clinical
Precautions You Would in the
US
• Gloves
• Masks
• Sharps
• Hand Sanitizer
3. TEAM SAFETY
Remember your training – keep
your awareness level high for
potentially dangerous illness or
disease. If you find yourself in a
compromising situation (i.e.
accidental needle stick with
potential HIV patient) tell the trip
leader immediately.
Venomous snakes have been
seen before at clinic sites so
remember to avoid tall grass
areas if possible.
Use hand sanitizer frequently.
If you are not feeling well at the clinic site and need to take a break please
notify the team leader.

HEAD COUNTS
Head counts will be taken at arrival/departure points for clinic, hotel, airport, and between flights.
Your team number is on your nametag and the team leader will ask you to call out your number at times.
Emergency contact info will be on the back of your nametags so make sure you keep them in the field/transit.
PMI uses the “buddy system” for added accountability so make sure your buddy is accounted for before traveling.
LODGING
PMI has selected these accommodations because they are the safest lodgings for our team. But remember there are certain procedures that should be followed while traveling abroad.
Team members should never leave hotel grounds without the approval of the PMI Team Leader.
Example: Jogging outside grounds prohibited
Example: Walking to the PMI health center unsupervised is prohibited
Drinking alcohol is prohibited on the trip – keep your wits when in unfamiliar surroundings.
Please avoid drinking tap/shower water. Use the bottled water provided for you in the lobby at all times (drinking, brushing teeth, etc.)
VALUABLES
Passports and other valuables should be locked in hotel safe or kept on your person at all times.
Always lock your room doors, and never leave expensive items, passports, cash alone in the rooms.
Treat your contact information (e-mail address, mailing address, or phone number) as valuable and do not give it out under any circumstance.
TRANSPORTATION
Van drivers selected for team are the best in the region, but remember international standards of defensive driving are not quite U.S equivalent. If you feel unsafe, please remind your drivers that they are carrying precious cargo.
Vans should never separate from the group in transit to/from clinics, hotels, and airport.
Windows in vans should be closed at all times when stopped in transit.
CLINIC SITES
Remember your training – keep your awareness level high for potentially dangerous illness or disease. If you find yourself in a compromising situation (i.e. accidental needle stick with potential HIV patient) tell the trip leader immediately.
Venomous snakes have been seen before at clinic sites so remember to avoid tall grass areas if possible.

If you are not feeling well at the clinic site and need to take a break please notify the team leader.
FREE DAY GUIDELINES
Do not pet or touch the animals.
The no drinking policy is still in effect on free day.
Do not leave your valuables lying around the resort/lodge.
In Nicaragua- swim at your own risk and adhere to any posted safety warnings.
In Uganda- Do not swim or jump in the Nile River or any body of water for any reason.
Please limit the number of team members on each van roof to eight people during the safari. Do not stand up on the roof to take pictures. The driver doesn’t know you are standing up and he may hit a bump that sends you flying off the van.
GIFTS & DONATIONS
Do not give money or gifts to anyone without first consulting your Team Director.
PMI does like to give generously to the local community, but it is better to do so through the proper channels.
We do not want to perpetuate a cycle of dependency and expectancy.
You will have the option to give to different programs at the end of the week through tips.
