    1. Core Competencies for MLIS Degree at SJSU SLIS Competencies Developed and Demonstrated in Second Life
    2. Competency “B”
      • Compare the environments and organizational settings in which library and information professionals practice
      • Activities:
        • Observed reference interaction at a staffed reference desk within Second Life as both a customer and a reference volunteer
          • Compared and practices with reference interaction best practices in real life
          • Compared the utility of Instant Messaging tools in Second Life and those used by libraries for virtual reference
    3. Activity
      • Observing reference practices in Second life as a reference customer at Information Island.
      • I am being helped by three volunteer reference librarians.
      • Communication is done through live chat and Instant Messaging
    4. Competency “C”
      • Recognize the social, cultural and economic dimensions of information use
        • Activities:
          • Volunteered to publish a book for a free educational project and museum in Second Life
          • Evaluated and analyzed the nature of information production and exchange in Second Life
          • Produced text and images for a book
          • Produced a formal presentation of my findings

      • Presented a book created and published within Second Life by a community of volunteers
      • Presenting findings and analysis of forces motivating the production and consumption of information within Second Life.

        • Activities:
          • Learned to use and navigate Second Life as a medium for communication
          • Created interactive objects to provide information to Second Life visitors

      • Used the search function within Second Life to locate and use communication tools
      • Learned to move through the Second Life virtual world to find objects and tools
      • Learned to build objects with scripts and textures in Second Life
    8. Competency “I”
      • Use service concepts, principles and techniques that facilitate information access, relevance, and accuracy for individuals or groups of users
        • Activities:
          • Created an interactive information kiosk.
          • Determined typical user needs and questions by observation
            • Created a kiosk that answer the most common question asked by visitors to the SJSU island: “Where am I” and “What is this”
          • Tested kiosk for usability with feedback from visitors.

      • Created an information kiosk to answer common question
      • Kiosk poses typical questions:
      • “ Where am I” and “Who created all this”
      • The interactive scripts can either send avatars to other locations that display images of island contributors or take them to the homepage of the SJSU SLIS program for further information

      • Demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for group work, collaborations and professional level presentations
      • Activities:
        • Gave two book talks at a SJSU Second Life event
          • Book talk topic:
            • Stalinism on the Frontier of Empire: Women and State Formation in the Soviet Far East, Cambridge U.P., 2008
        • Presented findings from research for a Second Life learning project on publishing in Second Life
        • Demonstrated Second Life to librarians at a CLA conference exhibit booth (November 2008)
