All students will learn core engineering knowledge, skills and understanding, including practical skills essential for progression. Mathematics and science will be applied to the engineering curriculum making the learning ‘real’ and relevant. All students will complete work placements in engineering. Engineering learning is based around a series of real industrial problems facilitated by industrial partners and will offer a range of personalised progression routes. All students will have opportunities to develop and record the personal learning and thinking skills that are so valued by employers and Universities.
Aston University Engineering Academy will have a state of the art building that will help ensure we are nationally recognised as a centre of excellence in providing the very best engineering and technical education for successful and rewarding careers.The design of the Academy building is in itself an incredible piece of engineering, utilising 21st century technology for its energy and heating and cooling systems. Learning about this technology will be just one of many ways in which ‘real’ engineering is integrated into the learning for our young people.The building has 13 specialist engineering and science workshops and laboratories that have been designed and equipped in partnership with our engineering industrial partners. Each of these learning spaces are equipped for specific industry focused engineering disciplines and will ensure all students gain an understanding of the range of disciplines that make up engineering.All engineering and science learning areas are specifically designed to ensure that learning is practical, ‘hands-on’ and set in an industrial context.The building has also been designed to ensure all our young people enjoy and achieve, feel safe and are comfortable. The work, social, dining and recreational spaces have all been designed for the use of students and staff to develop a learning community in a shared, vibrant learning environment.ICT will be readily available to students and staff throughout the Academy to support and enhance learning. All areas of the Academy offer wireless connectivity to our virtual learning environment supported by extensive availability of laptop computers. Our Learning Development Centre provides access to PCs and a range of hand held technologies to enhance learning. In addition there are ICT suites for engineering research and development, CAD/CAM, control technology, and science.
