This was a presentation made at BITS Pilani Goa Campus to introduce "Abhigyaan" - an education for all initiative - where students take up responsibility to teach basic communication reading and writing skills, math to illiterate people who are too old to go to school or are too poor to merge into a mainstream school (even if financially supported)

Education System in India <ul><li>After five decades of development, education still remains elusive, with 59 million children between 6- 14 still out of school (of which 35 million are estimated to be girls) </li></ul><ul><li>The Cultural and Educational Rights is one of the six fundamental right that have been granted to us in the Indian Constitution. This right allows every citizen of India to have education upto where that person wants. </li></ul>

    5. 5. Our journey began on 20 th August, 2005 – the 61 st birthday of our late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi – when we had 34 people enrolling in for “Abhigyaan”

Abhigyaan – at a glance <ul><li>A completely student managed education drive at BITS-Pilani Goa Campus, wherein BITSians teach their “students” rudimentary English, Hindi, Mathematics, advaced English, Hindi as per their desire </li></ul><ul><li>Teaching times are chosen weekly thrice (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) satisfying the convenience of the “student” and the “teacher” </li></ul><ul><li>Teaching material made completely by BITSians. </li></ul><ul><li>Each student is adopted by 6 BITSians who take turns in attending to him thrice a week. </li></ul>
